In 2018 they took a base beer(Cake N Bake) aged it in Blis barrels for 16 months. Then they took Kentuckley(which is Buckley aged for a year in bourbon barrels) and aged that in Blis barrels for 16 months. At a 2:1 ratio it was blended and called Wake N Cake. This year they made a few variants. The regular Wake N Cake, Wake N Cake Blantons, and Wake N Cake with vanilla. They say an imperial stout aged in Blis barrels for the regular WNC, they added vanilla to that for the WNC vanilla, and for the Blantons it said an imperial stout aged in Blantons barrels for 12 months. So there is nothing but a generic Imperial Stout aged in barrels. Nothing about the base, adjuncts, ratio of the blend like the 2018. Does anyone have any info??? I shot them an email and haven't heard back. Please help!!!

It's a stout aged in a few barrels, one of which they added vanilla to. I don't think I remember the blend from 2018 and can't find anything to corroborate that either. I thought it was Cake & Bake aged in Blis barrels.

Here is the Facebook post from March 2018. This beer was a Frankenstein of sorts before I read the 2021 description compared to the 2018. I would think they would say what it is. The 2018 entry made it seem so epic compared to this years lack there of...

I think when they say Kentuckley, they mean the same base as Kentuckley. It specifically says no adjuncts added. I would guess the base this year took inspiration from that blend and what they learned over the years.

The base of Kentuckley is Buckley. And Buckley has adjuncts. When it first came out, they said they didn't add any more adjuncts to the finished product. They wanted to add more vanilla. Well they did this time, I just wish I knew what the hll it is. Transient won't answer emails about it.

The quote you took from the 2018 post says:

this blend was so rich and full we left it as is. Just those lovely BLIS maple syrup bourbon barrels and stout.

I know Kentuckley is BA Buckley, but that doesn't mean they add the adjuncts and then age it. It may just be the base beer in barrels and then adjuncted after. Their post makes it sound like there were no adjuncts, just stout and barrel. I would assume the same thing is true this year. If you have another source that says they added stuff last time, then I dunno.

I just opened my first bottle and while it’s a great barrel aged stout, it’s NOTHING like it was when last released. I’m very much questioning whether this was actually aged in Blis barrels, as advertised.

That sounds like a welcome change. It had seemed like their beers had been getting sweeter and sweeter.

It doesn't make sense to me to put Kentuckley and not use Kentuckley. It was confusing in 2018. And now reading a Imperial Stout aged in Blis barrels doesn't really do justice for a description. Unless that's exactly what it is. Which is lame to do that and call it Wake N Cake. It was such a cool concoction in 2018 and now????

I just think it was an imperial stout aged in Blis barrels in 2018, but two different base recipes blended. One of them was Kentuckley base recipe, just before the adjuncts.

The ‘18 release was the perfect balance of sweet and bourbon and this is basically BA expedition stout...

I get it, but if you’re buying a bottle advertised as “Blis barrel aged” you’re expecting some sweetness. This is a bad description on Transient’s part.

Blis barrels for Transient used to mean sweetness bomb. Prince Of Barkness or Reserve 2 were sweet maple craziness. Bad Hombre I felt lacked that Blis/Transient feel. That was the start. Lots of variables here. Less time in the barrel or other reasons. But for Wake N Cake, they should tell you what it is. It says aged 12 months on Blis and thats it. And putting the Blis issue aside. They have never shied away from labeling adjuncts or barrel info. Some of it got confusing. Just check out the description on Hello Barkness. Its a mouthful, but at least it's there. I just want to know what it is because it's definitely not Wake N Cake.

I'm surprised by the level of passion / interest on here for any Transient beer in 2021. Guess they're doing something right!

Buckley Select 1 was great. But the past few releases were ok. That BBA Bowser, when they said last year the base would go into Blis and bourbon barrels I was stoked. It came out and no maple flavor. Double Barrel Junie was good. They obviously have amazing potential, its a shame they are in a lull. The lack of information on beers doesn't help.

Why are you assuming that the information they gave wasn't the full story? Especially with the belief that it's something they tend to do a good job with.

Because Wake N Cake should have adjuncts and they didn't list any. You don't know what the product is. They have always been clear on what was in their beer. This seems like a fast one. If you didn't use vanilla beans in Marshmallow Handjee I would hope you wouldn't label it as being Marshmallow Handjee then.

But the link YOU shared for 2018 specifically said that it was a beer with NO ADJUNCTS. I know it said "Kentuckley," but I don't think that meant already adjuncted Kentuckley. The one thing we do know is that the post from 2018 said:

We love spices/adjuncts as much as the next brewer, but this blend was so rich and full we left it as is. Just those lovely BLIS maple syrup bourbon barrels and stout.

So, I don't know why you're so certain about saying Wake N Cake SHOULD have adjuncts, when it has never (either release) listed any (aside from the vanilla version this year, right?
