It wasn't bad per se, just super hot. I'm sure any amount of time would mellow it out a bit.

I second the Rye-on-Rye -- frankly, the boozy taste was a bit much for me. That said, it has the most distinctive BA smell and taste I've come across: there was no mistaking that it was rye, not bourbon. If you like rye, search it out.

To wander to the more general barrel aged beers that are barrel forward: Nøgne Ø's God Jul Barrel Aged - Islay Edition was kind of nuts -- it really was like drinking Islay scotch with a few beer notes.

I'll second the fresh FW Double DBA recommendations. Almost tasted like bourbon aged in a beer barrel.

Williamsburg Alewerks Bourbon Barrel Porter also surprised me with its up front bourbon.

    1) This thread isn't about Barrel-aged stouts.

    2) This thread is asking for the most predominantly flavored bourbon brew. I don't know about you, but I've had several barrel-aged bourbon brews that taste like straight bourbon.

Stone's Barrel-Aged Highway 78 was a booze bomb. I didn't like it as a beer, but it would have been decent as a whiskey.

It was though they either did multiple batches or a lot of kegs were put away as it's shown up a few times here and there.

And yeah the coffee bourbon barrel beer is rather disappointing. If they just called it a stout and didn't market the coffee and bourbon and it cost less, I might think differently of it.

If you happen to be in Quebec, or able to get your hands on Quebec beers, just had the Le Castor Wee Heavy Bourbon Barrel Aged, and it was straight up Bourbon in your face.... pretty much dominating on the smell and taste, and at 11%, you're a 1/4 of the way there to the real thing....
