What is this packing material?

    this was what belgium-in-a-box used to protect the bottles in an order sent to me earlier this year. does anyone know where to get some? it's like plastic foam pipe insulation, except colored light blue. but the pipe insulation at home depot is way too narrow in diameter. wider insulation, such as for ducts, is always fiberglass, which is both way more expensive and hazardous. second photo below is roughly how a 750ml bottle was packaged by them.

    i find this material superior to bubble wrap in almost every way, especially when dealing with various bottle shapes and sizes, which can be quite wasteful of space when using a styrofoam/cardboard wine/beer bottle "shipper". efficiency of space is particularly useful when packing into check-in airline luggage.

    anybody know where to get more of this stuff, short of placing another order from belgium-in-a-box?

    Instead of tape use multiple rubber bands....Then you can easily reuse all of the supplies.....

    i tried rubber bands once with luggage, but some of them still fell off. luckily nothing broke, but a couple bottles ended up very loosely wrapped.

    Some of the pool noodles used for floating around the pool are thin walled, 3/8" maybe with a large open core. I have cut them to make koozies before.:grinning: May be hard to find during the winter season though.

    Search for "trampoline foam pole sleeves". I am certain that is what they are.

    I had to replace the foam sleeves on our trampoline recently. They can be difficult to find in stock at any store. I had to order online from Sears or Home Depot, can't remember which. They are fairly cheap and you can save shipping by doing an in-store pickup.

    I've never thought of this particular use for them, but I think they would work pretty well.

    Kind of looks like pipe insulator to me. Something along the lines of this?

    It's pipe insulation available at Home Depot. It looks like you have 3/8" wall, but it also comes in 1/2" wall which would just provide more protection. We use a similar, but superior product where I work, but that should work fine for your application.

    I see in this stuff, or something very similar, all the time in FedEx/UPS packages at work. I think it's a pretty common packing material. If there's a place around you that does a lot of package shipping, stop in and ask if you can have some of their garbage. Worth a shot.
