IPA's have gone from English IPA's that are fairly balanced between malty and hoppy, to American West Coast IPA's that are very hoppy, to New England or Juicy IPA's that are juicy and hoppy.

But more recently some newer IPA styles seem to be Belgian IPA's that are fruity, yeasty, and hoppy; and Milkshake IPA's that are creamy and hoppy.

So what are some new emerging IPA styles, particularly ones taking root in the American Midwest?

    Love to hear from others.

    Thanks, BB

West Coast IPAs. Seeing more breweries doing WC IPAs these days. Still not as much as before but it seemed like so many breweries were only doing hazies/NE ipas. Now I see those breweries doing both styles. NE still seem to be the most popular but I am seeing a resurgence in clear, and clean IPAs.

if you’re most interested in Midwest IPAs maybe post on that particular forum.

Belgian IPAs are not a new thing, they've been around for quite a while.

I don't foresee a new IPA trend that'll catch on like the NEIPA did, I think we will see the hazy trend start to fade a little bit and a resurgence of the WCIPA and C hops.

I hope that grassy, resinous, piney, basically-licking-tree-bark IPAs start to come back in vogue. I really miss those.

New Belgium’s winter seasonal, Accumulation, is a White IPA and readily available at the moment. Quite good too...

I feel like session ipas are still a thing. So many low calorie IPAs released this year and more to come next year.

I hope more kviek IPAs come out. The ones made well are really enjoyable.

From recent memory, this is time line of hyped IPA's in the US

    West Coast IPA
    Black IPA
    Session IPA
    Adjunct IPA (grapefruit/coffee/peppers/etc)
    New England IPA
    Brut IPA
    100 Calorie IPA

I'm happy about this. I'm hazed/NE IPA fatigued. I do like some certain breweries that make them, but there are so many nasty ones, imo. A clean/clear, crisp, hoppy, piney, grapefruit, citrus, dank, and somewhat bitter West Coast IPA is the best. Amen, brother

I'm with ya' on that! Please, would somebody tell breweries to stop making milkshake IPAs?! Or at least stop calling them IPA?! Haha They are not IPAs, imo. Lol

Brut IPA's were supposed to be the thing. I can't remember the last time I saw one.

Triple and Quadruple IPA's are popping up around here. I think I might even have seen a quintuple? Or maybe I just misremember that. At any rate, I can't bring myself to enjoy anything much over 8%, except maybe as something to pour over pancakes.

They are still everywhere, some are just labeled as 'low-cal' now, not 'session'.

The ones in my area doing both are still putting some haze and softer mouthfeel into their so called 'WCIPAs', so kind of a hybrid and not that good (from what I've tried, which isn't many).

Last month @cavedave discussed a 'new' IPA sub-style of West Coast Hazy IPA in a NBW post:

"Characteristics of West Coast Hazy IPA
    • Lighter-bodied, dry finish, minimal residual sugar
    • Hazy in appearance, not milky
    • Hop-derived (not yeast-derived) aromas similar to NEIPA
    • Bitterness somewhere between an NEIPA and a West Coast IPA
To elaborate on those characteristics a bit further:
    • The body is similar to what some now refer to as California IPA or even a lager. A hazy beer is not always thick. This may throw people off, but the availability of thousands of London III bombs will do that.
    • Haze brings softness to beer. You can achieve bitterness and softness simultaneously, which is kind of cool."

That sounds akin to what is termed "West Coast Hazy IPA" sub-style discussed above (post #16).

How many commercial versions have you had? Did any of those breweries brand their beers as "West Coast Hazy IPA"?

    Cheers!

Good call and I haven't had that one in a very long time. I'm gonna make sure to grab some next time I beer shop.

I agree with your time line, but I feel there was also a wave of real lean pils malt no crystal malt IPAs that were popular right before the adjunct phase. Examples are Sculpin and Flower Power.
