I just opened a "Caboose Oatmeal Stout" by American Brewing Co.
When I attempted to pour it into my glass (as I usually do) beer foam took over. I poured for less than 2 seconds and foam spilled over the top of my glass and spilled everywhere. There was like an inch of actual beer in there, the rest was "head."

I gave it a few minutes, tried again in a different glass, same thing.

I gave it a few minutes, and decided to just drink it out of the bottle....yeah, as soon as I tried to take a drink, I got foam all up in my nose and spilling out of the bottle.

What gives? What caused this? I know how to properly pour a beer and have never had this problem but I am fairly new to craft beer/brewing so idk.

Should I go to the shop I got it from yesterday, show them the picture and ask for a refund?

    Looks like an over-carbonated batch.

I had the stark weather stout from liberty brewing that was the same way. Over carbonated after a few minutes it goes completely flat. It never hurts to tell the shop and see if they will give you a refund or another kind of beer. Their whole stock is probably the same way

This brewery is not properly representing America. But the OP is by having Tabasco sauce be the only food product present on his table.

I would pour that stout over some vanilla ice cream and hit with the Tabasco, problem solved.

The answer to your question is yes, take that picture and get a refund and a replacement of another selection. The photo is pure brilliance. No offense, but it should be titled something like "The Basement". Pure function. Even a bottle of Tobasco at the ready for the next food delivery. OK, what are the book titles?

So, after my tongue-in-cheek post earlier, I decided to get serious and see where this "American Brewing" is from. Looks like they're based out of Washington state. Made me remember when I had some brews by Scuttlebutt and Diamond Knot a few years back and they were also over carbonated. Good, but over carbonated to the point that the OP describes. My guess is that this is a bottle conditioning/climate issue. Anyone with more extensive knowledge care to chime in?

Yeah I would ask for a refund. Either over carbonated or infected; most likely... If they don't refund & can't give an explanation you buy off on , then the hell with them...

Thanks all. I will go back tomorrow afternoon and show them the pic and ask........I just hope that, without a receipt, it won't be a waste of time. They are generally a pretty good and understanding bunch though from reviews I've read...

Has to be a carbonation/conditioning issue. If it was infected, the taste would be off as well. I wonder what method of carbonation American Brewing Co uses. Either way, I would be inclined not trying to get a refund from the store, as it doesn't seem to be their fault. It might be better to contact the brewery directly.

The taste was off, as was the smell. Smelled/tasted very very metallic.

Cheers to the (backwards?) Duck-Rabbit Milk Stout in the pic! Saw your review: "Will not buy again." You oughta try again. Great beer!

mhmm, it's possible, then, that it was infected. Then again, maybe that's just the way the beer tastes lol.

The same thing happened to me yesterday with a beer from Epic Ales (also based here in the Seattle area, as is American Brewing)... I suppose maybe we just don't know how to brew beer here. Unlike the OP, I just enjoyed what beer I managed to salvage and went about my day. It wasn't my first gusher and likely won't be my last.

Yeah. I think over carbonated beer is the least of your problems.

not to be a dick but how did you pour said beer?
When you opened the bottle, did it foam and cascade over the bottle neck? Or was the massive head resulting from the attempted pour?
The more info you give the better...
What was the initial smell and flavor?

This was after it settled for 25 minutes. It originally looked like the OP's picture.
It didn't foam immediately out of the bottle, just over-flowed out of the glass as soon as I started pouring it.
It was also VERY old, thank God it was a gift from a friend, but he wasn't definitely screwed over by getting talked into buying the variety case from his local distributor.
I don't know if he ever went back and got his money back, but I would have, especially after being talked into buying it!

So to answer your question: Yes, go back to the shop, show 'em the picture and see what they say.

This happened to me the other week with a bottle of "Adam" from HOTD, which is bottle conditioned. The HT glass was the first pour, I then resorted to trying another glass, to no avail. I had a damnation while I waited for it to settle, but I had heard of over-carbonation / infection issues with HOTD so I was a little prepared. Either deal with it, or take it back.. it happens, especially with bottle conditioned beers.
