I'll be working at Jaxtoberfest this weekend (which ultimately is just a bunch of boring German stuff), and I've looked through the BA list of places to hit and noted some places to check out, but I'd like some personal recommendations. Is there anywhere I absolutely must go?

Must go to Kickbacks and their new place next door, goozlepipe & guttyworks.
Aardwolf brewing is making the best bees imo.
If youre at kickbacks, inuition and bold city are a short walk, though I would probably not recommend walking to bold city later at night.
Also in riverside is grassroots market, which has an extensive bottle selection.
If you make it out to the beach definitely hit green room, a few minutes away is engine 15.

    Have fun!

I not been to the newest place, vets (veterans), simply because its just another IPA brewer and we got enough of those IMHO. I am a vet and that name kind of bugs me.

Aardwolf was really doing some interesting stuff the first year, to me the beer has changed. They was using brett allot and now they are scared of it. I think pinglehead is the best atm, but best is relative. I rather go to euro street and drink founders Porter and eat a sandwich than visit Any other place in town ATM. but that is just me.

This is a great town for hop heads. at least quantity wise. nothing here will ever win any awards....

European street + a nice beer + tabouleh hummus rider w/orange spicy mustard is where it is at!
    Great recommendation!

Don't listen to azorie. Hes the goth kid of the local craft beer scene, nothing is good if its local. He's entitled to his opinion, but look at the ratings and reviews here and elsewhere... almost no one else agrees. High standards... blah blah.

For breweries go to Intuition, Aardwolf, and Greenroom. For bars try Kickbacks, Peles, and World Of Beer (hate the atmosphere, can't argue with the selection). Bottle shops: Grassroots and Beer 30.

If you're looking for some good beer stores to shop at definitely hit up Grassroots, it's an organic grocery store but their craft beer selection is phenomenal and they carry good glassware. Also, beer 30 is good and it's right across the street from an excellent restaurant, can't remember the name at the moment but went there for the BCBS release last year and they had it on tap. Not saying they will have it on tap now but they have some solid food and beer. I'll have to look into what the name of that place was for you.

Heading to Jacksonville for a couple days, we just got reservations at G&G. I'll come back and post some opinions on it later. Looks like a super sick place.

Actually a few awards have been won. By multiple breweries in the area. Someone must've pissed in your Cheerios. Also, veterans isn't an "IPA Brewer". You don't know much man. It's not even an opinion thing, you're just... Wrong.

WOW, not sure why you feel the need to attack me, my opinion is just that. I had vets first beers (guest taps and euro street), and yes in my opinion it's just another IPA brewer, as that is the fad and that is what all of them are doing making hop forward beer.

As for what award they won and any of that, its something they should be proud of and post on their web sites. How else is any one going to know? I visit every local micro in town allot. I never seen any say they won (anything) in any tasting room. But hey maybe me and the wife missed the signs.

As for vet beer line up, well I am sure they will add more but thier first beer was an very hop forward beer, that is as close to hoppy pale ale as one can get IMHO.

No one pissed in my Cheerios, I was stating what I was told. But hey you can disagree with this old vet if you want to.
I will make the long trip down to vet today just to know what its like.

So, I just wrong and I do not know much, that is very rich, you do not even KNOW me. wow is all I can say. lets meet and we can talk this one over, you game?

    very childlike.

You right but I am sure since no 1 is twisting ANY one's arm to read my what did you call me goth reviewer? My reviews are for me. No 1 cares. and I never said not to visit to ANY place locally. But I can see what I say bugs you, want to meet over a beer and discuss? You do not know me but you feel the need to attack me. Many of the locals have their fan boys and hate any honest critical thinking I guess.

Again another person who does not know me, but feels the need to not add to the conversation and its ALL opinion BTW, beer and places ratings are subjective. So maybe you are just mad?, or maybe your just one of those folks who attack others if you disagree.

Either way, I love to discuss this over a beer. Once you know me, maybe we have some common ground?
Either way, I have the right to my posts.

Sorry, I didn't intend to start a flame war. Perhaps my goth kid comment was uncalled for.

But... you are a very loud voice/prolific commenter and very negative about the local beer scene. I understand there is a lot of unconsidered positivity around anything local, but I think you go so far the other way that you have a bias against anything in this area. I just wanted to make clear to any outside observers (as if the aggregated ratings on this site wouldn't by themselves) that your opinion is very much in the minority, both in general and among serious beer geeks. I have seen things in some of your reviews that I think are completely off the wall, others (both positive and negative) I have agreed with.

You are entitled to your opinion, I just want visitors to the area to take it with a grain of salt.

You know I do not mind constructive criticism but be specific what have I said that offends you so? I am very loud? how do you get loud in a forum post folks can ignore? So why if I do not rate every place at 4 plus is negative? How is my honest well traveled opinion wrong and not readable? Folks can make up their own mind, I do not say NOT to read your posts....
So I am at the lower end of the ratings, some one HAS to be, you honestly think every place here in Jacksonville is WORLD class?
    wow.

Flame war no I am not wanting that, I want to chat in person. Then If you still feel the need to disrespect my opinion in public so be it. I try never do that on here to folks I never met.

sure I am not a fan boy of poor beer. I know beer as well as ANYONE in this town. Yep I feel my 40 plus years gives me the right to say what I like and dislike.

Folks that come to Jacksonville for beer will know to look for list of places to go. They will try them. I also know many who do agree with me. Sadly most do not feel the need to be on this site.

I also Have no skin in the game. I do not work for any brewer or distro, or bar. I drink, I travel.
I express my 2 cents, feel free to ignore me there is a button for that.

Goth yea that was totally disrespectful, I do not even own a black shirt. lol

You are loud because you post a lot. Its a metaphor.

"nothing here will ever win any awards...." To me that's a very negative, broad, and flat out wrong generalization. My opinion.

I certainly don't think everything here is world class, but some are very good. Do you honestly think everything in Jacksonville is mediocre at best? Actually, I believe you do. One thing I definitely wouldn't accuse you of is lacking in honesty, you are very upfront with what you think. Its just that I, personally, disagree with you. Just sticking to place ratings, I think you have underrated Kickbacks, Grassroots, Intuition, Aardwolf, and Green Room.

For the record, we have met. Years ago at one of Steve Rushe's beer junto meetings. Steve and company tried to brainstorm ways to help grow the local beer scene. You talked about Westvleteren for 30 min. Honestly, if I were going to Belgium anytime soon, I would consult you on the subject. But when it comes to American beer I disagree with your taste and standards, especially on much of what exists in Jacksonville. I will continue to express this opinion whenever I happen to come across a conversation about the local beer scene where it is relevant. Nothing personal, but you post more than anyone else in the local area (or the whole state of Florida) so I am probably going to end up publicly disagreeing with you again. I will endeavor to be polite when I do so.

I post more than anyone really? I bet that is not true. You disagree fine, say why you disagree. I do not support anything automatically. For the record, I rated many beers good here, and places even higher. Still that is no reason to "attack" some one. I am NOT the chamber of commerce.

Really While I know I went to a few of those (junto's) because of another ba wanting to form a junto and he had a web site on that, that was years ago. I do not remember "meeting you" I remember drinking a few beers on baymeadows. What I mean I was drinking a beer, and some 1 might have said this is john and mike etc. I still do not remember you, I guess its old age...sorry. I never bought into what he was doing, I just drink the stuff. No money or desire to form a biz.

Not that I had any idea about promoting Jacksonville. I wanted more good beer, really do not remember chating with anyone other person. I would call it just beer chat. I assume we said hello but I am not good at remember folks after only 1 meet. Steve worked at Total wine and I seen him a few times. I think he is gone now. Or I just never go when he works, whatever.

So ok my saying they will never win awards is pissing you off, ok. I get it. So have they? I stand corrected if you give me the link...

I will say this, I met and chat with many folks in the micros here, and I ask them If they know and or read BA/RB. So many do not, they read Yelp or nothing. so nothing I write will change anyone visit plans, trust me.

My offer stands I love to meet you again and then I will remember you. I assume you do not own a bar or pub here right?
I be glad to revisit almost any place. Except 1.

My opinion of American beer is formed by drinking the best of the world before craft even came back. I guess that makes me not a American beer fan boy...wow. ok You got me there.

Not a fan ipa's either, but I do not tell folks NOT to drink them.

How do you rate a place under, A review is not a yelp ad. Its a review for me first. Please folks do not read my reviews. You will find a honest world view of a person who has traveled to many places that serve great beer. You will NOT find me praising anything because its local.

that's does not make me a hater of any place or beer. You said you think I am honest in my reviews, well there you go. If folks want to rate every place a 4 and up so be it. but seriously no way do we have 5 world class micro's here. nope not going to buy that one.
