So I'm headed to Europe for 2 weeks, and because I'm using Chase airline miles to pay for it I have a 10 hour layover in Philly. Not complaining though. I'm actually kind of excited because I have the BA app and I can ask all of you fellow beer enthusiasts where the best places, within 45 minutes to an hour, are to get a good brew. Breweries and bars. My wife and I thank you in advance.

A simple search will show you this topic is asked basically weekly.

That said, some more info will help us respond. Will you have access to a car? What 10 hours will they be (not many options at 8am)?

The Philly Tap Finder website will help you find where a particular beer is pouring, super helpful. And one more tip - Alla Spina, an all-about great place in the city, will have Younger on tap Sunday, starting at 6pm (tix at 5).

Take the Paoli-Thorndale line out from 30th street station to:

    Ardmore: Tired Hands
    Wayne: Teresa's Next Door
    Paoli: TJ's

$12 for an all day train pass, per person, which will cover you for the duration.

Considering they are on a layover, I'd say no. So within train or cab of the Airport.

Thanks again everyone. We will be getting a rental for the day since I found one for $30 after a little research. It'll be from about 8am to 6pm. And I apologize if this is a redundant thread. Definitely going to take all these posts into consideration when we plan our day. Cheers!

For what it's worth, all the places I listed are within walking distance of their perspective train stops. In fact, TJ's and Teresa's are a stones throw away from their train stations.

You could easily take the Airport line to 30th Street Station as I mentioned: http://www.septa.org/schedules/rail/pdf/air.pdf

And then take Paoli-Thorndale line to the other places: http://www.septa.org/schedules/rail/pdf/tho.pdf

You can get tuned up and not worry about having to drive . Sorry, I'm just a huge advocate for the regional rail system due to the proximity of local establishments to it. Of course if you're looking to check out other stuff, perhaps a car would make more sense.

I would check some of the other threads, but it depends on what you want to do. If you are looking for bars to go to- philly tap finder will help.

If you want to go to breweries, I would suggest Tired Hands, but they arent open every day.

This is important. They're closed Mondays and open at 4pm on weekdays (12pm Sat & Sun), but the 2nd location will be open soon and I'm not sure what the schedule will be like or if you will be here when that location is opened. Also, if you're driving, seriously consider the rush hour traffic if you'll be here on a weekday. Driving back to the airport from TH during rush hour is going to be a nightmare.

I'd suggest just walking around center city and the other adjacent neighborhoods. there are plenty of good bars with beer options and other things to see.

the spots that grimey mentions are good, I don't think I'd take the train there and back its probably an hour each way depending on when you go. and with the exception of tired hands the others are just beer bars. while both have good tap list and good food, you can probably find equal or better in the city.

also keep in mind that you will have been in an airport for a few hours, before your flight, then an hour or so flight, then this layover, then in an airport for a few hours, then a +6 hour flight to Europe.

a day walking around the city might be good for your legs.

Use über instead of taxi or train. Much easier.

Skip the rental car. Way more hassle. You have no idea how to get anywhere. Traffic is terrible (do NOT drive out to Ardmore, you may end spending 6 hours sitting on the Schuykill), in Center City parking is expensive, and plus, you want to drink beer, driving back to the airport with a buzz is not a good idea. You can take the train right into CC, it runs every 30 minutes and takes about 30 minutes to/from. Taxi from airport to CC is about $30. Either is a far superior idea.

If you're only in Philly for the day, I really don't see any point in going out to Tired Hands and spending your day in the suburbs. Yes, the beer is tremendous, but your still in Ardmore. Go into the city, see the sights, you can drink tremendous beer at 50 bars in CC, all within walking distance of each other. Go to Monk's, you may not leave. Good Dog and Strange Love are a couple blocks away. Go check out City Hall (largest municipal building in the nation and the worlds tallest masonry building!). Walk through Society Hill, see Independence Hall (etc). On to Old City, hit up Khyber and Eulogy for more beers. Nearby a little more history http://www.elfrethsalley.org/.

    There's tons more...

I would skip the rental car and just get a cab into the city. You could get dropped off around Independence Hall, take in some sights and either walk or cab over to Monk's. Grab a burger, some great beer and call Uber to pick you up at 3:30 to head back to the Airport.

    Add Bru and Tria Taproom.

And, again, cancel the rental car!

I would vote for an exploration of beer in Philly. Take the train from the airport to Center City (e.g., Suburban Station which is near 16th & Market) and walk to Monks or any other number of good beer bars in Center City and Old City.

    Easy peasy!

    Cheers!

I actually encourage this. Sure it is not great, and certainly overpriced. But... don't skip things that everyone back home is going to ask "did you go?". So, yeah OP, go to 9th & Passyunk (take a cab from CC). Then walk 2 blocks south and have beers at the Pub on Passyunk East (known as the POPE).

I'm gonna add my vote to the "scrap the rental" idea. Why add stress to your day with driving? Philly has a large number of great bars all within walking distance, and the rail system is fairly easy to navigate. Driving into the suburbs sucks, and why bother with searching and paying for parking in the city?
