I've made Hop Tea with a few pounds of Columbus and Calypso hops. Calypso Tea was more palatable than Columbus.

Smell them shits. If u open them and just handle, smell, taste,etc... You can get a good feel for a particular hop varietal.

So many good suggestions on how to best use the birthday gift and don't disagree. Being that's an unusually specific gift since you don't home brew, I'm more fixated on the "why"?! (Not meant in a bad way.)

If you open the hop package, squeeze all the air out of the package, re-seal, and put it in the freezer for best keeping.

A Randall Jr. just showed up on my doorstep today, so maybe this gift was less boneheaded than I thought. But, I have little confidence in the coarse grating's ability to hold back the particulate once the hop pellets disintegrate in the beer.

Loving the ice cream idea.. Like, orange or mango sherbet with hops steeped in the liquid before freezing..

I use a vacuum sealer. They will lose potency and could potentially pick up flavors in the freezer if not air tight. But seriously....if you have home brewer friends, then you already have the best answer.

I had a sorbet once from The Bent Spoon in Princeton New Jersey that was infused with hops. Don't recall if it was citrus or pineapple, but the hops where probably cascade. I just keep thinking how I could do it better. If you go this route first make a hop tea and strain well so there are very few particles in your sorbet.

If you have ever tasted a gravity sample from your home brew kettle, you'll know it's much more bitter than the finished beer because of the tiny hop pieces in it.

Nice, method to his madness . It would seem that your fear is valid based on this thread: Randall Jr. Thread. You can buy a very fine strainer and place it on top of the glass before pouring, check out your local Kitchen supply store. I have one specifically for filtering out seeds when making a sorbet, so it is very fine. Have fun.

I thought this said camel and Troegs Perpetual IPA. That'd be a weird ice cream, but I most likely thought that since I recently bought camel milk and a lot of ice cream. I think I just really want Camel Milk Ice Cream (or Cheese).

Contact ABInBev. Tell them you have smuggled 'secret' hops out of a large craft brewery and this brewery was gong to use these hops to develop a lager style that mimics Budweiser without the adjuncts. Name your price.

The Bent Spoon in Princeton, NJ once made a batch of citrus sorbet infused with hops. It was good, but there were pieces of hop debris in there that made it a little unappealing. To remedy and attempt at home, I would make a tea first and strain it before freezing the liquid or use leaf hops instead so pieces aren't in there.
