This is just a friendly discussion with a friend and we're really curious what the community might have to say on this one. We've mentioned the ruination, ruinten, devil dancer, pliny the younger...

We're talking mouth numbing, tannic drying, taste bud wrecking, bitter puckering beast out there

You're talking most bitter beer then, not hoppiest. And I'd have to say Palate Wrecker is definitely up there for me.

    Hopsickle was disgustingly bitter.

Short's Liberator and Bell's Oracle are intensely bitter beers done right.

That beer is pure mercaptan in my opinion. A disgusting, poopy beer.

For the record, we need a new way of talking about "hoppy." It's just too confusing for most people to sort out whether we're talking about early addition bitter hoppy, or late addition taste/aroma hoppy.
My vote: Let's call beers hoppy when they have lots of late additions and just call them bitter when they are....bitter.

Personally, I don't like really bitter beers, but if there was a hop aroma air freshener, I'd have one in every room. Late additions and lots of 'em!

Never mind, after some investigation it appears the initial information I read was wrong.

Devil Dancer almost made me shit my britches from the bitterness. Palate Wrecker's definitely up there too, along with Stone Ruination 10th Anniversary.

great responses everyone, a great point that's come up is we do need a better way of differentiating between "hoppy" and "bitter."

^This. Palate Wrecker is a mess of a beer, in my opinion...I'm a total hop head and I can't stand this one because it's so abrasive.
