The only IPA/DIPA I've had that that was just nasty and evil tasting to me was Weyerbacher Double Simcoe. But that was a couple of years ago; I should try it again as I know my palate has changed. But I don't want to :astonished:

Founders Devil Dancer was an unpleasant combination of booze and bitterness. When fresh, Hoptimum is just too resiny and oily bitter.

IBU's do not always accurately determine how bitter a beer is. You also have to factor in the malts used and things like the OG and FG. For example a beer with a very low malt profile might come across as being more bitter then one with a very high malt profile. Even though the IBU's are the same the malt dulls down the hops. OP was asking for most bitter beer not the one with highest IBUs. Even though those two things are frequently related one does not fully equate the other. You would have to use the IBU:OG measurement system to get a real understanding of how bitter or sweet something is.

I am shocked Maharaja is even in this conversation. I thought it was pretty balanced with malt sweetness.

Palate wrecker hurt me my first time....

I've had the opposite experience with Sucks. Absolutely loved the first bottle or two because of all the juicy hoppiness. But I struggled to finish the six pack because the intense tropical fruits became too much, tasting almost cloying and artificial.

Some like the IBU:FG ratio better, as a highly attenuated beer will not have as much residual sugar.

Zum Uerige Altbier is very bitter when fresh at the pub in Duesseldorf. That beer is highly attenuated.

    Hopsickle is definitely number 1.
New Belgium/Alpine Super Friends was a mess. Just was so sharply bitter it tasted way too acidic and awful.

1000 IBU is pretty crazy but doesn't come close to the ultramate version. Closest I've came to actually chewing on a hop cone. Which ive done being a homebrewer and curiosioty has got the better of me a few times. Lol

I agree. I found Maharaja to be malty and sweet. It was a like a hoppy red ale, but nothing overwhelming imo. I had Molotov Cocktail the other day and that was pretty over the top. I also think Oracle was far on the bitter end.

I disagree. I'm not a huge fan of IPA/DIPA but Sucks and 120 I could drink all day. I also brush my teeth with orange juice. Maybe it's me?

    Hop-15

    Dry hopped:
    Centennial
    Simcoe

    In the kettle:
    Amarillo
    Aurora
    Cascade
    Centennial
    Challenger
    Chinook
    Columbus
    Galena
    Golding
    Magnum
    Phoenix
    Saaz
    Simcoe
    Sterling
    Tettnang

Fifteen in the kettle, hence the name (though you probably already knew that). No idea on the percentages though which means I have no idea about a rough AAU. Still, a really good beer which is only let down by the inclusion of all that light English crystal malt.

Nah, they didn't have lab verification on the 1000 IBU, more of a packaging ploy than anything else. Dogfish head had White Labs test an IPA they brewed called hoo lawd, lab results confirmed 658 IBU, although most studies seem to indicate that our palates cannot discern bitterness above 100 IBU, so once you're up to 150 etc, you're just splitting (incredibly bitter) hairs.
