Ok, so I was thinking it would be pretty cool to set up a traditional style BIF in the following format.

I send out a box with 3 unannounced beers. The recipient of the box puts in beers that they would have been willing to trade for those beers and sends it on its way. The next person does the same so on and so forth. The final box ends up back on my porch. For the maiden voyage of this BIF I would be looking for 10 BA's with solid trading history and references to vouch with them.

So would people be interested in a BIF like this?

yes, but id imagine it would be better to have an idea on the "waleness" of the beers or vintages if that makes sense. Even on a 1-10 scale (yes subjective but everyone kinda get the idea).
What I'm trying to say is that would be sweet!

Sounds like a cool idea, kind of like that telephone game. I'm sure the values will fluctuate along the way.

Also, value is entirely in the eye of the beholder, making it challenging to ensure even quality along the way. As someone who isn't wild about sours (see what I did there?), I would probably "value" them at a lot less than market. That could result in a decrease in quality of bottles between me and the next person.

Just throwing it out there that this idea could be difficult as there is little to no objective measure of "value."

Thanks for the feedback so far. I really think part of the "fun" would be to see the difference between "market value" and "real time" value would fall. Clearly the point of stating I would be looking for BAs with solid trading history was taking the subjectivity of the value of beer into consideration. I would not want to see someone send out 3 limited wilds to have the next guy get a box of off the self locals.

It would be pretty tough to regulate. Plus it would put someone in a tough spot if they received a box of 3 rare vintage wales and they didn't have that kind of ammo in the cellar. What do you do then? Just swap one bottle for your best and pass on the two you couldn't adequately trade for?

I think it would be really interesting if it started with 3 bottles but didn't have to stay 3 bottles. I mean, there are a lot of one-off 750's that would be traded for a couple 4-packs of fresh Heady, amirite? So you could have 3 bottles turn into a huge effing crate of fresh & local. I can't see any reasonable person taking issue with that deal.

Oh, I am sorry, I didn't mean that the number of bottles needed to stay at 3 at all. If you were to get a box of 3 beers and you were willing to trade for them for 6 "lesser" beers that would be awesome. On the flip side if you got 6 sweet beers and were willing to trade for 2 super sweet beers that would be cool as well.

Why do I see a bud platinum in the box at the end of this? Lol. With that said. Sure, I'm in. Lol.

Love the idea...although this stands the chance to be great or horrific for you as the alpha and omega of this BIF. :-) I'd be in, assuming I qualify.

Ok, I do not want to see 6 palettes of BL 'nums show up on my doorstep at the end...

I think if you get enough people with enough experience/trades/deep cellar and kept it at 3 bottles traditional it would be really fun. Part of the fun is Beering it Forward, not saying "I value 'X' style less so I wouldn't send a great box off". People are still aware of value and if a person is okay with looking like a chump sending off a cheap box they shouldn't be allowed in the bif. Depending on rules and participants I have interest.

Sounds fun, but my cellar consists of...nothing. My luck would be that someone would send me a box of diamonds and I'd hate myself.

I really like the idea on this one, but I think everyone would have to agree to one of two options:
    1. Understand that not everybody has a mile-deep cellar, and agree that "what you'd trade" for one really rare bottle might actually be four growlers of some great, fresh, super-local-not-available-anywhere-else kind of beer. A lot more beer, equally hard-to-find, but in a different way. A trade that could realistically be accepted by both parties.
    2. Or just rename this "Unwanted Whales version X."

The idea behind this was definitely #1 NOT #2. I didn't mean to imply that this was a whale hunting expedition.

I think I'm in for this. My collection is always fluctuating, but I'd say that I sit somewhere in the middle on the "depth" chart. But I love the idea of having to challenge MYSELF to value what I receive versus what I'm willing to give up.

    Great idea Cuzco!

At the moment I'm possibly interested. Depends on how my first few weeks of school go in terms of stuff I need to buy for my apartment. Just keep me in mind when you kick this off

I'd be interested in something like this. Good beer, good people. It sounds like a giant pile of winning.
