What are the main styles that you've obsessed over in various stages of your craft beer journey? From beginning to end, as much as you remember.

I'm interested to see where the beer geeks ultimately end up.

    For me...

    1. Wheat beers (hefeweizens, Belgian whites)
    2. IPAs - This is where I really started to get hooked on craft beer.
    3. Belgian Tripels
    4. High Octane (Imperial Stouts, DIPAs, Barleywines) while also learning a healthy dose of Pilsners and Pale Ales.
    5. Dark Trappist ales (Dubbels and Quads)
    6. Saisons along with well crafted American styles, obscure styles and sours.
    7. At this point I just want Wild Ales and anything funky or barrel aged...preferably wine barrel aged. I've become rather jaded by Bourbon Barrel Aged Imperial Stouts. I just don't care anymore. Also at this point simpler styles are starting to look good to me.

    What's your take?

    Interesting post.

    1. Wheat/White bears
    2. Browns
    3. German Lagers (Marzen, Bock, ect.)
    4. IPA's
    5. Porters Stouts
    6. Belgian Darks, DIPAs, RIS. IPAs
I still like all these styles but this is how my favorites/preferences have evolved. I also still love a good pumpkin ale.

Shit! I missed my Brown Ale stage! It's in there somewhere.

I just feel like I'm not the only one who has general styles they stick with for a while.

    1. German wheats and bocks.
    2. Strong ales, pumpkin ales, browns and porters.
    3. DIPAs and barleywines.
    4. Saisons,IPAs, more barleywines, big stouts,
    5. More saisons, sours, pilsners, clean IPAs.

My taste now pretty much goes with the season. Saisons and light IPAs in the heat, DIPAs, barleywines, stouts and porters as it cools down. The only style I can't get into is Quads and Belgian strong darks. There's a sweet medicinal flavor that I can't get around. Oh well. Maybe one day.

Don't know that I've so much obsessed over any style, but my tastes have definitely changed. I used to hate witbier and now it's one of my favorite styles. I've always like hefe's and wheat beers and bocks. IPAs remain a once-in-a-while thing. Stouts used to be that, but they've started to grow on me in the last year after I first tried Mayflower's Winter Oatmeal Stout.

I still wonder about the witbier thing sometimes since I can't pinpoint what might have changed my mind or when. I mean, I really could not stand them.

Follow your taste buds...I think I just fell into the Quads and BDSAs because I always liked fake grape flavors. Weird?

I'm the complete opposite. I started loving wits and now I can't remember the last time I've had one. They just seem so boring to me. Although I'll always claim Allagash White to be one of the best.

IPAs IPAs & IPAs...Don't get me wrong I love Browns, Stouts, Porters, etc...but if I'm in any stage it's IPAs

I can't argue with that. The American IPA bar is constantly being raised and they just get better and better. I just can't stand folks who hinder on this one style and don't understand anything else. For them any beer is either an IPA or an "ale." It makes me want to shoot my face.

    1. american wheat. boulevard & odell come to mind.
    2. porters/stouts, shortly followed by imperial stouts. basically anything dark. guinness, sierra nevada, rogue mocha, then moving to old rasputin and the like...
    3. strong belgians. ommegang/unibroue to start, then moving on to st bernardus.
    4. ipa's. i still remember the first time i had picked up a 6 pack of an IPA and drain poured 5 of them because i thought it was so disgusting. this was probably in my porters/stouts phase. i don't really remember what the game changing beer was for me either, it's just like everything hoppy clicked.
    5. saisons. already enjoyed hennepin but then more became available in my area...i definitely probably would have appreciated these earlier if they were more abundant. it's still the first style i will generally suggest to someone who does not usually drink good beer if they are interested.
    6. sours. like ipa's, still remember the first time i had one - la folie - and was pretty much grossed out. i cannot get enough of them now and while still not my absolute fave style, it is the most exciting to me simply because i haven't had as many as other styles.

I find it interesting that Saisons are appearing so much. Definitely an underrated style...based solely on the fact that a lot of American brewery's screw them up so much. I thought Saisons where terrible until I had some authentic Belgians and well crafted American ones.

    1. Oktoberfest beers and Winter Warmers (really got into craft beer through fall and winter seasonal beers)
    2. Stouts and Porters (still a favorite style of mine)
    3. IPA's and eventually DIPA's (still very much in this stage and have been for a long time)
    4. Hefeweizens and Witbiers (got really into refreshing summer wheat beers last summer)
    5. Tripels and Saisons (Love belgian style beers, but much more partial to golden belgian ales than darker ones)

I gotcha..I'm still new in the game so I guess I haven't had the chance to encounter different phases, sours in particular. But to love one style and call everything else "ale" is pretty naive. If anything, dabbling outside of IPAs makes me appreciate other styles even more.

    6. Ipa, DIpa

    3. IPAs
    4. IIPAs--moar hopz!!!
    5. Rye Beers
    6. Imperial Stouts
