I think it's more of a mental problem than anything else. A lot of folks simply can't take a break from buying to drink down the cellar out of fear of missing out on something special.

250+ My reason is I like too many beers and I keep buying more. I'm in too many clubs and sometimes I have FOMO. I need to quit buying so much, but then that new BA stout with hazelnut, coffee and coconut is released, and by golly, I want it.

Thought I would give this long standing thread a bump. This thread is more about self-reflection, rather then our thoughts about "the other guys" bottle count.

So back to the original questions

    What is your bottle count?

As of today, I'm at 87. That includes 7 bottle I have not picked up yet.

What is your optimal bottle count?

50 is probably optimal for me.

Are you headed in the that direction?

    Not really,

I tend for oscillate between around 70 to 100. When go over 100, I hit the brakes on buying hard, as that's a bit of red line ( as in to much for me ).

On the low end of the scale, being in multiple beer clubs contributes from my count rarely dropping below 70. In addition, the trend toward smaller formats ( 12oz, 16oz, 375ml, 500ml ) has increased the count while not really increasing the ounces on hand by much. Three years ago my count was almost exclusively 22oz and 750 bottles. Now its a mix of formats, which I think is generally a good thing, even if it increases the bottle/can count.

What is your bottle count? 47.

What is your optimal bottle count?
40-50. I keep our seven favorite varieties on hand, plus I keep a rotating stock of 2-3 others on hand, whether it be new ones we're trying, seasonals, or ones that we don't like enough to keep on hand all the time. So, that could be as much as 60 bottles, but I've never been in a situation where I needed to buy all ten varieties at once. (Besides, some come in four-packs, and one of my favorites comes in a two-pack...and I only keep one pack of anything on hand.)

Are you headed in the that direction?
    I'm good to go.

    What is your bottle count?

    117

What is your optimal bottle count?

I have quite a few varieties of stouts on hand that I like to cellar and thats the bulk of my collection. Then add in my go to IPAs and seasonal brews and I get to 100 pretty quick. 100 is probably the optimal.

Are you headed in the that direction?

Nope. Tend to drink more in the summer so this number is probably going the other way. Don't see a lot of the stout collection getting drank in the warm months and there are always new IPAs to try.

    444

What is your optimal bottle count?
Less than 444... Probably around 200, if they were 2/3 stouts and 1/3 sours. Problem is that I’ve got a bunch of non-cellar-able beer. This reinforces that I have a buying problem rather than a drinking problem

Are you headed in the that direction?
Absolutely not. This gave me good insight into my situation, though (it’s been a while since I’ve tallied everything up). Seems like I should focus on getting the count under control for the remainder of the year (e.g. drink more)

    So, what works for you?
Storing in my closet in cases and apple boxes and spending a lot of time on spreadsheets. I pass more often now on special releases, but sometimes, you just have to buy in bulk when it "makes sense to". For example, I tripled down on Lagunitas High-Westified in 2016 and bought another case in 2017, and I'm glad I did. They're still awesome

    What is your bottle count?
362 in CA (incl. 35 High West-ifieds, 24 FIS, and 29 Expedition Stouts)
62 in IL (mostly CW, BCBS, and Revolution)

What is your optimal bottle count?
250ish? Most "big" beers I like aged, but I could stand to have much less than what I currently have. Some I'm aging up to 10yrs.

Are you headed in the that direction?
Yes. I'm trying to buy less often, buy 1-2 singles instead of 4 or 6 packs, buy less bombers, and drink down my collection.

Right now I have 7 bottles/cans in the fridge, all different. Have been having them with a slow pace lately, so the count is enough as a buffer.

Pretty surprised at how many cellars are mainly stouts. Im usually at 75-100 bottles, predominantly being saison and lambic. Once a quarter i get a big uptick when i pick up EF bottles at Casey too.

I have a commercial fridge solely dedicated to beer, but I am more drawn to the second part of your post when you ask '..why?' I'll respond with the wise words of Bud Dry; why ask why?

Mainly because of abv. Outside of a share i struggle to drink hi grav stuff alone. But i guess thats more a personal preference

Over the past six months I cut down on my buying due to being on government furlough and my wife being between jobs, so changed my answer because I'v dropped (just barely) below 100. But now that's behind us, so I'm back to hoarding favorites!

    So, what works for you?
I store my beers in a small beer fridge.

    What is your bottle count?
54 including several IPA's, pale ales and a few other lower ABV styles that are not meant to be aged.

What is your optimal bottle count?
    40. I am a little heavy on the 'styles not meant to be aged right now'.

Are you headed in the that direction?
Yes. I'm down from about 80 two years ago.

I have about 50 beers in my "cellar", stouts, sours and a couple of barley wines. In my fridges I have about the same amount, but of the drink soon kind of styles. The ideal is probably between 40 and 60 for me, plenty of variety so I can have whatever I feel like, so I'm pretty much in the zone right now.

Wow, good to see this thread opened up again, since the time I replied I have done well in reducing the cellar, which I always in past have had trouble to do. My problem I have come to realize wasn't the consumption end, it was the re-stock end of it. I have cut way back on putting bottles down there now. Would like to get to around 75 worthy bottles.

    So, what works for you?
My beers are in the boxes they came in in a coat closet that isn't used. Keeps a good temp. Others are in fridge to consume.

    What is your bottle count?
Cellar is about 148 different beers/years. Have multiple of some so probably closer to 160. Fridge has about 40 right now though working on those steadily.

What is your optimal bottle count?
Less lol. I don't really buy in person anymore, just online. Those I normally don't age but maybe one or two a month. Like to have the cellar a bit lower as some are getting to be near 6 years old.

Are you headed in the that direction?
Hoping to. As mentioned above I don't really buy beers to cellar much anymore. Working through my monthly shipments a bit more now. Getting more ruthless in what to keep in my cellar as well so should have a few of those the next few months.

I currently have about 30 IPAs in my fridge, a little more than I would like, actually. I also have around 20 bottles of BA Stouts, Saisons and Lambics in my cellar, as well as half a dozen bottles of Orval that I'm aging.
