Nearly 2 years later since my post above and I'm pretty much exactly at the same place. Currently have 12 beers in cellar and follow same thinking. Only change is that I tend to turn over beers in cellar quicker as bottle shares have increased. So basically I'm buying more and consuming more "cellar" styles of beers but its only to keep up with hanging out with friends and providing quality beer to share.

Pretty rough guestimate, but I think I'm sitting at around 200 bottles + 50 cans

Why? I like having beer on hand and I'm pretty bad at saying 'no' in the bottle shop when I see a new BA barleywine. 4 and 6 packs of various stouts really boost the bottle/can count up. If I could whittle it down to 100 large format bottles of much higher quality, I'd be very pleased. I don't like letting new-to-me beers sit in the cellar though, so that's tough to do.

Since the last time I posted on this thread about 21 months ago, I went from 40-50 to about 120 currently. A few months ago I peaked at around 200 but have been trying fewer new beers and drinking off my cellar instead. Some are two years old, but luckily a majority are BA stouts so they keep well. Haven't figured out what the right number is, given that I drink 6-10 beers a week.

Its been a while since I voted but I'm still in about the same place. I though it might be less as I recently swapped a refrigerator for a commercial cooler and tried to reduce the amount of beer that I would have to transfer. And I did, but counting the cellar I'm still in the 250 range. Oh well!

I'll be moving to northern Arizona in a year or two, and my house there has a real cellar, so until then... exactly 4 bottles of Bigfoot

No space to put anything, holding on to a couple bombers of Trillium Stouts and this years KBS and BCBS, and a couple randoms. Plus beer for drinking.

500+ pretty sure it's increased in the last year. I even move it a year and a half ago, I don't recommend that. Drink it, much easier to drink it.

I have a little over a case. That includes:

    9 Lagunitas Willetized
    6 Tröegs Mad Elf
    4 SN Bigfoot
3 Tröegs Mad Elf Grand Cru

Plus 3-4 random bottles/cans. I think it's stayed the same since I had around a case in my apartment closet about a year ago. I think I'll try to get to around 2 cases and keep it there. Drink and replace. My wife doesn't drink at all, so even if I drink 2 beers she thinks that's a lot.

I'll never understand cellaring to the point of hoarding. There's no way you're drinking most of the beers at an optimal time. And that's a shame.

I generally have 8-12 beers on hand. That's it. Out of this allotment, around 5 are "drink fresh" and the rest are generally BA stouts and barleywines. I never sit on beer for more than 2 years. That's really playing with fire.

Have been steadily lowering the total down to under 200, and with two events coming up that will go down a lot. That is why I collect, so my friends and I can enjoy.

I have one single can of Sixpoint alpenflora.

    Why?

I’ve started cutting my consumption back to Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I don’t trade and I’m going to Scotland this week so I don’t need any beer in the fridge. Hoping to pick some goodies while aboard.

I like to give this thread a kick around this time of the year.

Here is my trend over the last few years of this thread:
    • 2015 - 94
    • 2016 - 84
    • 2017 - 79
    • 2018 - 93
Last year I bucked a good tend and increased my bottle count. I attribute it to two things:
    • The move towards smaller formats ( 375ml, 12oz, 16os, 500ml ) of which I buy more of then 22oz and 750ml .
    • The fact that I joined two more beer clubs, for a total of three.
    On the plus side:
    • I gifted more beer this year
    • I attended more bottle shares
Given that my count swelled to more the 100 bottles in December, I'm feeling pretty good where ending the year. 100 bottles/cans is a bit of red line for me.

My goal this year remains the same as past years, reduce the bottle count.

Here is the original questions of the thread:
    • What is your bottle count?
    • What is your optimal bottle count?
    • Are you headed in the right direction?
    Where do you stand?

Anyone change there vote in the poll?

This past summer, I realized that I had close to 150 beers in my cellar, almost entirely BA stouts, porters, and quads. I made an effort to slow my buying (struggled due to out-of-state buying trips), but still managed to get my cellar down to 50 or so. Since then, I've unfortunately built it back up over 100. I only drink perhaps 5 to 7 a week, and buy a lot of single new-to-me beers besides restocking the cellar with seasonal favorites.

Right now I am home on govt budget furlough so am making an effort to save money by limiting buying while drinking down my cellar again. Probably half of my cellar are BCBS regular and variants, plus Prairie BA stouts such as Pirate Bomb/Noir, plus Avery BA beers. I don't drink a lot of those, but should. I stuck with my vote of 100-250, though I'm on the lower end this time.

Less than a dozen, I pared down many many years ago, when I really stopped trading. At least new trades, since then it’s been 2 BIFs only.

Typically, everything I buy gets consumed quickly, as I'm not a huge fan of aging (except for Belgians). But I got laid off in June, and after six months of debauchery my unemployment benefits have ended, so I'm detoxing until further notice.

From my response in Summer of 2016 I moved up from the 26-50 to 50-100 with an increase in units from 49 to 70. Increase from some new cellar additions and some BIF participation.

I see I replied about 2.5 years ago. I haven't counted lately, but I think my cellar is down slightly since then. I've gone in and popped some bottles from there, I;ve replaced them, but I think not as much as I've drank. I've brewed since then as well, and some of those have counted. Imperial stout and sours age very nicely, even homebrew versions.

I'm at the stage where my cellar is exactly where I want it to be and I can pick and choose among things that are getting to their prime range and replenish annually. Yes it could be better but I'm happy with what it is.

I'm still where I was (50-100) when I first posted to this thread two and a half years ago. About the only difference is that everything in my cellar is two and a half years older. Same goes for the wine I have down there. I really should throw a block party or something.
