I've just recently started getting into this style and it's quickly becoming one of my favorites. I've had Nighttime and Wookey Jack. Both of which I loved.

Just curious what everyone elses favorites in the style are. Cheers!

Nighttime and Wookey Jack are easily two of the best. Hard to find many better than that.

Here are some other suggestions (by the way, I believe there was a thread about this recently):

    - Real Ale/Surly/3Floyds Blakkr
-Sierra Nevada Blindfold (pretty good and very easy to find in the 4-way IPA packs)
    -Odell Mountain Standard

I think that thread is still pretty active. The two you mentioned are probably the consensus favorites, along with Uinta Dubhe.

And they are often described as Cascadian Ales too if you are searching for them.

    Odell- Mountain Standard Time
    Stone- Sublimely Self Righteous
    Bear Republic - Black Racer

Is Lagunitas Nighttime considered a black IPA? I thought I saw at listed as an American black ale, or strong dark ale...maybe not. Doesn't matter so much anyway. The point is I had one for the first time a few days ago and it was freakin awesome. Mega hoppy, I was burping up tasty hops for an hour after done drinking it. Ah, the gift that keeps on giving. :grinning:

There's really no set name for the style. There's American Black Ale, Black IPA and Cascadian Dark Ale.

Glad you like the Lagunitas Nighttime. It's such a steal for the price. We recently had a bomber sale at Wholefoods and they were going for $3 each. Bought a couple :grinning:

An American Black Ale IS a Black IPA. There was some discussion over the "proper" name for this new style a couple years ago, and IIRC, either the BJCP or some other industry standard chose the ABA moniker, and BA followed suit.

Alpine Ugly if I could get it. Nighttime is good, Widmer Pitch Black used to be one of the best, but I don't think they make it anymore.

Wookey Jack is great and on the top of my list. Second is Dubhe, by Uinta Brewing out of Salt Lake. Trout Hop, made by my local brewer Grand Teton, is pretty darn good too!

Midnight Ryder from Indeed Brewing is my current favorite. It's only available in the Twin Cities, but you should easily be able to trade for it if that's your style.

The Black IPA style was never really a favorite of mine; usually I get some unpleasant chalky and/or licorice tastes (especially apparent in Stone's 15th Anniversary). Hoppy Feet is my favorite because it doesn't have any of that. Great, natural roasts flavors and intense hops, nothing off about it. Love it.
