What's your favorite Black IPA?

Did not like Wookey Jack. Maybe it was an old one or something. I recently bought a bottle of Cascadian Schwarzbier not really knowing what to expect, but it was from Jack's Abby, so I bought it. When I smelled the hops I thought oh great, another Wookey Jack. Nope, this beer was fantastic.

Really not my favorite style by any means. I find the hop varieties have to be very specific in order for me to be able to enjoy it. That said, I found Mikkeler's Sorte Gul excellent because of the pungent, earthy qualities that I picked from the hops, that married well with the darker malt base.

Not to be an echo (echo echo), but there is another thread on virtually the same thing (mentioned in my earlier post). But one comment -- when I first discovered craft beers, I was partial to ambers/pale ales and then quickly moved up to IPA's. But still had mixed feelings about stouts. I feel like Cascadian Black Ales (or whatever you want to call them) are like the delicious illegitimate child of an IPA and a stout -- I almost always find them very balanced. Not as heavy as stouts, not as likely to induce palate burnout as IPA's, and for the most part very tasty.

Yeah, I forgot Dubhe. The beauty of this thread is it made me realize it's been ages since I've had Dubhe and that I need to pick some up. Funny thing is I couldn't find it in two stores today.

I had been totally dismissive of Black IPAs until I tried this one. Sold.

 

Maine Weez and Wookey Jack are easily my two favorites here. Smuttynose' Noonan Black IPA is another favorite and a nice tribute to one of the styles pioneers.
