One of the first beers I had right after I really became indoctrinated to this great beer world we live in was Sierra Nevada's Weizenbock. Very good. Will always hold a special place in my gut for that beer.

Aventinus in a big wheat beer glass is great to nurture over any period of time. It stays the same and changes, and warms you up to boot!

+1 A really well done weizenbock that I would love to see return. Bought the living hell out of it while it was out ther.

I've heard Goatboy's pretty solid, yet to have it.

Had to go with Aventinus Tap 6 at #1 (also enjoyed the eisbock version), with Vitus a close second. I'll definitely be on the lookout for the Ayinger now, based on all the raves above (have had only their Celebrator, Otoberfest and Ür-weisse).

Another fine weizenbock—now sadly retired—was Weyerbacher's Slam Dunkel

I give it the edge over Ayinger Weizenbock because of better availability and a lower price point.

Ayinger would get my second place vote

    Erdinger Pikantus is underrated IMO.

I am not a big fan of Schneider Aventinus, not a bad beer, but to me, not as good as the others I mentioned.

Now, the Eisbock on the other hand is in a different league IMO and is a phenomenal beer (not a weizenbock, though)

Lookiing over my notes, from this list, I have a tie between Aventius Tap 6 and Vitus. If I had seen the results ahead of time I would have voted Vitus to support the underdog. Also tied, but more limited offerings were AleSmith Decadence 2009 Dunkel Weizenbock, Lagunitas Doppel Weizen and Beer Camp #37 Weizenbock from my favorite Beer Camp pack of all time. I rated all of these a 9.

I see someone noted Southern Tier Goat Boy, which I just had last night. I liked it, but when I was done, I thought it was more similar in profile to a Scotch Ale. On the sweet side (it's Southern Tier) and a big caramel flavor and aftertaste, but with lots of clove.

I voted for Tap 6 but I got to say that there aren't enough widely available dark wheat beers. Whether they're doppelweizens, weizenbocks, or dunkelweizens, there just aren't enough of them. I'm very glad that Anchor is putting out a dark wheat beer as their winter seasonal this year. I'm anxious to try it.

I could not imagine a world of only weizenbocks. I like them, but never more than one in a sitting, and they don't pair well with many daily bites of life

Saint Arnolds Bishop Barrel 4 was a bourbon barrel aged weizenbock aged in Bourbon Barrels with cocoa nibs. It was simply amazing.

Tap 6 for me. Does anyone happen to know if there is a difference between the Tap5 Schneider & Brooklyner Hopfenweisse available in the US and the Schneider Weisse Tap 5 Meine Hopfenweisse they serve at Weisses Brauhaus in Munich? I have had it on tap there and it was delicious.
