Some will "rend their garments" when I say this, but I don't understand the hop craze that seems to be a trend now. Everyone has their own preferences and tastes--I like smoother tasting beers--but it seems that for many people the higher IBU the better. We have a "birthday beer club" at work and there are a few guys in the club who fit this. Not that they are obsessed with IBU but their eyes light up and they go out of their way for a beer which hits 80, 90, or 100 IBU. I do like some IPA's (Deschutes Fresh Squeezed would be a regular in my fridge if I had easier access to it) but it seems to vary with the beer. Am I missing something or do most people really like more bitter beer or is this just a trend?

Below 20% for me. I appreciate good IPAs, and will occasionally order a pint, but there's so much more out there I prefer. (This said as I am headed to an IPA-heavy Bell's event).

Would be 100% if not for my weekly tastings, right @Norseman?

Used to about half when I was in PA, and it was all Headhunter or 2HA. In CA, I would bet at least 3/4 IPA, the rest is usually some RIS. Sculpin, Swami's or Sucks is always in the fridge.

I go through phases but IPA consumption is about 40%. But this time of the year offers some of my favorite seasonal beers such as Narwhal, Velvet Merlin, and some other specialty dark beers, so it drops.

As far as what I buy to drink around the house, it's almost exclusive shit I can cellar. When I'm out and about, I like to drink IPA's. Well...unless there's a good stout on draft.

I'm probably around 60% or so. But I tend to fluctuate, not based on the time of year, but just generally every few months or so (just because it's what I feel like drinking). Though I've been on my latest IPA "kick" since May.

40-50% IPAs (Including DIPA/IIPA), 40-50% darks. IPAs are just about the only light-colored beer I drink. If I had access to whichever beers I wanted all the time then I’d be about 70% darks, but I’ve found many bars and restaurants just plain don’t have any stouts or porters, or on the rare occasion they do it’s something commonplace (i.e. American Guinness) so I’ll take a solid IPA over a common dark any day.

IPAs can be amazing when you get those tropical fruit flavors like pineapple, mango and orange but I don't get those flavors very often when I drink IPAs.

I'm in the 20 - 40% range. Since 1 in 3 craft beers consumed is an IPA or Pale Ale according to BA data it's safe to say the group should fall in that range. Maybe higher on the BA site......

I often consider rigging up one of my faucets to pour Revolution's Anti-Hero exclusively. So...like...50% of the time?

I would've thought beer geeks would be into greater variety than the general craft-drinking public. But, you're right that this site does seem to be dominated by IPA & IIPA drinkers, the hoppier the better it seems.

I'm on the high side of 0-20. I think I need to slow down on the sours and saisons....just kidding.

This is a tough one for me to answer because I go through phases and I drink totally dependent on my mood but I took the average and I'll say I am up to about 40% at this point...this is quite the jump from the 0% it was once at years ago.

People who like American IPA's are posers, imo. Who can deal with that catastrophically bitter witches brew. Anyone would claims to like that is a masochist, or a victim of The Emperor's New Clothes Syndrome. Everything should be in balance. IPA's were originally intended to preserve beer before refrigeration on long trips to India. The extreme hop bitterness was a trade-off, so the beer wouldn't actually spoil. But some dolts in the U.S. oddly were in love with that bitterness, and said, "Let's cultivate a hop that is bitter as possible, and then just load down a beer with it and call it "American IPA". Sierra Nevada Torpedo is a prime example of this absurd revolting concoction.

I'd say around 45%. It all depends on what's new. I try not to repeat beers unless: 1) it's free; or 2) it's on my top 20 list.
