Imperial Stout or a Trappist. I go big if I want a nightcap. Max effect without the getting up to pee an hour later.

Ambien with a ten fiddy chaser. Works every time. Unfortunately some times my body stays awake after my mind goes to sleep. #ignoremypostsaftermidnight

If I have a nightcap, my favorite is DFH Burton Baton. A nice stout, or anything barrel-aged (Backwoods Bastard, BCBS), also just feels right.

I don't have a specific fave, but dark/black high gravity sippers are my preference - Imperial stouts and barleywines are typical choices.

Founder's Imperial Stout or Choklat this time of year. I refer to it as dessert.

Nice thread! Usually a stout, porter or barleywine out of a snifter on the nightstand as I watch TV!

Usually something dark but last night sucks did the trick since I drank heavier during the day with the storm.

I'll be the party-pooper.... alcohol upsets natural deep sleep that your body needs. You may close your eyes a little sooner, but the trade-off is the quality of your sleep.

old horizontal seems VERY fitting as a nightcap beer

Id also go with herresy, blithering idiot, Brooklyn monster, old Rasputin, 3 bean, cream brulee, choklat, expedition, black note, BBC barleywine\stout, and narwhall as good nightcap brews. I also want to say stone expresso imp stout, wake and bake, and thunderstruck coffee porter.....but the coffee might make it hard to sleep.............still their all damn good.

Truthfully I prefer something lighter as I usually make a big boy the main attraction. Say if I go enjoy by, hopslam and nugget nectar then I'll grab a hefe, or a spotted cow for example, one last beer just to cap the night. That and if I happen to fall asleep I dont feel bad about pouring it the next morning. Or drinking it, in the case of ten fidy.

    This.
I usually have a ten fidy or something similar (by similar I mean tasy and dark) in the winter before bed on the weekends. But when I do this I almost always wake up a couple hours later, and not just like stirring, but wide awake.

    Same.

And you know the morning after a night of heavy drinking in addition to headache/nausea you feel completely wiped out even though you laid in bed "sleeping it off" for 8+ hours? That's because passing out does not equal sleep. The body may not have moved, but the brain was awake all night.

I just tried Schloss Eggenberg's Samichlaus. It is IMO a perfect nightcap beer.

Odell's runoff red IPA, or as of late I've been working through a growler of Stone's Old Guardian, poured into the 10.5oz old guardian glass and it gives me a heck of a buzz, especially following it with a Sucks.

If you're gonna be a downer, might as well get it right :stuck_out_tongue: Alcohol promotes TOO MUCH deep sleep, you skip right over REM sleep. It is directly related to how much someone drinks- most people don't catch much of a buzz from one 12oz of 10%, and as such one of those won't disrupt most's sleep.

Also, Instantly being wide awake is the middle of the night is a blood sugar thing.

I usually sip 2-3 beers over the last 3-5hr I'm awake, does that count :stuck_out_tongue: Drinking slowly makes me tired, drinking quickly (i.e. buzzing) wakes me up. Last night I had in order, a GF WCIPA, a Sucks, and another GF WCIPA. Tonight's will probably be similar
