During the winter I love to put away IPA's, but during the summer I get a craving for less bitter, more sweet beers. Recently, I've really been enjoying Hefeweizens and Witbiers. I really like DFH Namaste, Shiner White Wing, Hoegaarden, Weyerbacher White Sun Wit, and Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier. Any suggestions on some other tasty wheat beers?

Lagunitas Lil Sumpin Sumpin is one of my favorites. How 'bout a gose? Anderson Valley has a 4.0 ABV out now. Bell's Oberon is a summer treat.

I'll second the Lagunitas Little Sumpin Sumpin and Bell's Oberon. Little Sumpin Sumpin is on the more bitter side, but falls just short of the IPA range. In my opinion it is very well balanced. Oberon is less bitter with a strong citrus (orange) note also well done in my opinion.

Definitely give Oberon a shot if you can find it. 312 Urban Wheat isn't half as bad as people on BA make it out to be.

Also +1 for the Allagash White, though keep in mind it is an extremely spiced wit, much much more so than a Hoegaarden.

Of course, you can hardly go wrong with German Hefeweizen: Weihenstephaner, Ayinger, and Schneider Weisse among the best. Erdinger and Franziskaner are good second-tier Hefeweizens, but are often better than their US brewed counterparts.

I'm not a fan, but a lot of people like Gumballhead as a hoppy wheat beer. Personally, for me, if you're drinking a wheat beer, you're in it for the yeast flavors not the hops, but to each their own.

I don't care what people say, Lil' Sumpin' Sumpin' really shouldn't be thought of as a "wheat beer." The IPA characteristics completely override any underlying wheat flavor. Even the texture is pretty much standard IPA.

Germans continue to outshine everyone else with wheat beers. Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier, Dunkelweiss, and Vitus are all stellar. Same goes for Schneider Aventinus. Paulaner Hefeweizen, Ayinger Brau-Weiss and Ur-Weiss are all stellar as well. It's really pretty hard for me to rank any of those above the other, with the exception of Vitus being my clear favorite.

I really like Boulevard Harvest Dance Wheatwine and Allagash Odyssey. Especially Harvest Dance. Unfortunately, any bottles you see now are nearly 2 years old, as they didn't release it last year (they will this year, however). It's aged on oak spirals while being dry-hopped with Citra and Hallertau. Odyssey is like a hybrid Belgian Quad/American wheatwine. For a more manageable everyday American wheat beer, Boulevard 80 Acre is spectacular.

I like witbiers, but I think there's only four you ever really need to drink. Allagash White, because it's the best; 5 Lizard, because it's the second best; Jolly Pumpkin Calabaza Blanca, because it's a fairly unique wild/bretted take on the style; and Hoegaarden, for historical reasons. There are other good or even great wits out there but you are usually better off going for a German weissbier,

Paulaner, and Hofbrau both make good, easy to find hefes. Andechsner and Augustiner Brau make a couple of the best hefes I've ever had, but they might not be distributed in your area.
