My wife and I are going to take a trip to Europe next summer and were considering going to Belgium. Which styles generally have wheat and which do not? It doesn't have to be gluten free, just wheat free as she has a wheat allergy but is okay to have gluten. Thanks.
Avoid anything described as wit or blanche. Hoegaarden and Brugs are probably the most common of those, present in 90% of bars. Otherwise steer clear of the lambics. (*Cantillon Iris is the exception, if she wants to try one of the lambics.) There are probably a few funky one-offs that I haven't thought of, but I think that if you stick to familiar stuff that you've seen in some normal bars, and ask your bartenders, you'll be good. Might also check the Benelux forum.
Thanks, I will check over there as well. So it sounds like in general all other Belgian styles (Dubbel, Quad, Belgian Pale Ale, etc.) won't contain wheat (with some exceptions of course). If so, this would be great for her as in general she has just avoided Belgian beers since normally what she thinks of are the whit and lambics.
