Anybody familiar with the area? Pittsburg is close so that's cool, but I imagine the beer scene is gonna be pretty scant in Wheeling. If anyone is around and wants to bottle share or something, let me know. Could also potentially bring up some CCB and other southern goodies if anyone is interested in an IP trade.
Basement Brewery is worth trying if you're more into sampling local fare than trading whales. Otherwise, not much to suggest or even to drive to.
Not as much into trading whalez, but if someone was looking for regional seasonals eg White Oak Jai Alai, WNB Coffee Stout, Good Gourd etc I'd be interested in seeing what regional stuff one might be interested in trading. Also passing by Wicked Weed on the way north. This thread was moved, and because of the proximity to Pittsburg I posted in the forum I wanted this posted, but whatever, beeradvocate.com ianfromtampa on Instagram...
Four weeks? Your best plan is to familiarize yourself with the options in Pitt. It is a 1-hour drive that you will be happy to make once a week. WV has nothing to keep your attention that long.
Ouch. I've driven through Wheeling a time or two and not noticed a thing worth stopping for. Pittsburgh is probably the best bet. Unfortunately, probably my favorite store/bar in the area (House of 1000 Beers) is definitely on the wrong side of Pittsburgh. I was in town for a wedding earlier this year and definitely like Hop Farm, which is closer. They were releasing Margot at the time, which I'm sure is long-gone, but also had an IPA, saison, and a couple Browns that were all quite tasty. Sharp Edge is worth a look as well for a decent place to eat with a good beer list (there are a handful of them around town).
Driving. I'm leaving Tampa today and hopping around Atl, Greenville, Asheville, and Nashville until Oct 13. And all this Pittsburgh advice is why I wanted this posted in the Mid-Atlantic forum. Keep it coming I'm sure I'm interested in making a trip up to Pittsburgh once a week or so.
Since you are driving I would stop in Charleston, WV and go to The Charleston Brewing company downtown. It isn't too far off the interstate and they do a bunch of different styles. I really enjoy the IPA's they brew. Also, since you will be in Wheeling you could make a trip to Columbus or Cleveland OH, both have some great beer spots. If you are looking for bottles and traveling up I-77 you could stop off in Marietta OH, the first exit in OH on I-77 and stop at the house of wine. Both have excellent bottle options.
I always liked CBC also, but if I'm not mistaken they have closed their restaurant front and are focusing on being a production only brewery now. The retail space has been taken over by a burrito joint out of Huntington, although they do serve CBC beers there still.
You are correct, the burrito place - black sheep burrito, Has about 8-10 taps of only CBC beers and they get rotated pretty frequently. They do a lot of different styles and the food is pretty darn good too!
i stopped in black sheep burrito about a month ago. the food was good, i had a sampler of 8 and they had one other beer on tap. all were pretty good. i think there was an ipl or german style pale ale that was really good. if you can time it right stop there for lunch.
