When and why did you become a hophead?

It's only within the last (maybe) 2 years that I admitted to myself that I am a hophead. A very open minded, liberal hophead, but yes, a hop head. I like all styles, but always lean to an IPA. This has been at least a 20 year progression since I had my first "craft" beer of a Saranac case at a party, and I'm sure Pete's Wicked was somewhere near the beginning, too.

It took a long time for me, but for any hopheads out there, how did you get there?

I think the idea of being a hop head is silly, I doubt you would enjoy hop tea or hop cones. Brewing is multidimensional. How many "banana ester heads" or "cat piss" heads are out there?

I'm definitely a hopfiend. Just like yourself, I like all styles of beer. But whenever I go to my local shop, restaurant, party, I'm always looking for an IPA over other styles. If I can't find anything I want, I'll settle for a stout or an ale or else I'll leave empty handed. I think I've grown to be a beersnob this past year and my girlfriend has noticed it as well.

Still an amateur and willing to learn more as I go along. But overall, I love the new hobby. Went from sneakers to beer. And I think the latter is much cheaper...to an extent.

I drain poured around 4 hoppy beers because I couldlnt handle the hop bitterness so I think it took me like 6 months max to get used to it.

LOL. I went from dvds/cds to beer which was a good decision since dvds and cds are almost dead and everything is going digital/streaming now. The problem is convincing non drinkers that beer is a "hobby." Good luck with that.

It was about 6months in to drinking craft beer exclusively. Being a hophead is like the difference between wanting something and craving a certain something. I"want" beer but I have lots of times where I "crave"hops.

i got into craft a little over a year ago. i explored belgians first and i still love them. i like all other styles too. but then one day i had a stone ruination. blown away. i would guess around 50% of the beers i consume these days are either an ipa or dipa.

This is why I have so much beer around the house.. Find myself buying 3 or 4 non-hoppy beers each week (plus 6 or more hoppy beers). I HAVE to have hops almost every other night, and when I only drink 6 - 8 beers a week and 5 or so are hoppy, well you get the math.

I still haven't, and after 21 years of drinking beer, I probably wont. Big, hoppy, bitter beers just don't do it for me. Cheers to you who do love 'em though!

I'm trying to slowly get reacquainted with non-hoppy beers; which I am starting to dig again.

I like variety, but after one or two sessions without a hoppy beer I have to get my lupulin fix. Have been that way for a long time, but in the past few years have gravitated toward the aromatic, less bitter side of the spectrum vs. high gravity IBU bombs. Probably every 3rd or 4th beer I consume on average is a Laurelwood Workhorse, it really hits the spot for my palate.

I am not gonna lie.. I wouldn't categorize myself as a hophead. I tend to like maltier beers best, and while I can enjoy the occasional IPA.. I am still working on building up a tolerance for extra hoppy beers.

When I think of a hophead I'm thinking more of someone who wants hops to dominate in any given style, not just someone who loves IPAs. For instance, I know some people who don't dig saisons but LOVE Tank 7, because of big hop aroma. Same with hoppy pilsners, stouts, ambers, browns. Which, I think, is why there are so many new brews advertised as "[insert style/color] IPA".

Actually the beer I won't drink anymore: Hopslam, a revelation that any beer could be that good/ maybe 2006 or so. Right now Abrasive hits me the same way that beer did forever ago.

My friends always bought pitchers of Two Hearted. I nursed a glass for months before I developed a taste for it. Now it's a great session beer. Nothing turns me off more in the description of an IPA than "balanced."

I drank a lot of Lagunitas IPA in highschool and never really enjoyed it, mainly because my palate was really underdeveloped and was used to drinking pabst blue ribbon. So i stayed away from IPAs for awhile because of that. Then when I was 22 I started working somewhere that sold Pliny, so I gave it shot because of all the hype I had always heard. From then on I really started enjoying hops.
