Last month I went to Fenway Park for the first time since turning 21. When I went as a minor, I would see the beer prices and think nothing of it because I had no frame of reference as to what the price should be. I knew the beers in the park cost more than normal, but I had no idea how much more. In the second inning, the Narragansett guy came by with his big tray of cans, and I noticed something. Like all the vendors, he had a big button on his shirt that showed the price of his wares. I looked closer, and the button said $7.50. Just the day before, I'd bought an 18-pack of Gansett for the cost of two Fenway Gansetts. That was my "aha moment" in terms of beer pricing as a captive audience.

Bottom line for me: It's not nearly as enjoyable when you pay almost as much for one bottle of any beer than you would pay for an entire six pack. So even when there is some decent beer available, I won't pay $9 for one bottle when a six-pack goes for $10 - $12 in a store. I know they need to make a profit, but when a restaurant charges $6 for the same bottle that a stadium charges $9 for, I abstain.

You guys in the US can't complain. a normal price for a 6 pack of Bud is $13.99. Deschutes often runs $20/6 pack; SN Torpedo is up there as well. You cannot find a 650ml of craft under $6.....

$150 for a Sam Adams Utopias? $55 for a Bourbon Country Rare? $30 bucks a pop for those delectable Fifty Fifty Eclipse offerings? NO BIG DEAL. I’m so frivolous, I bought a Hummer to check the mail… and that’s ALL I use it for.

Price became a factor for me when I did an honest assessment of what I was spending on beer during an average month. Now I spend a lot less and still enjoy my beers very much, plus I have a few extra bucks for a monthly (versus weekly) splurge.

$7.50 for a beer at Fenway? I haven't gone to a game since they tanked in September a couple years ago. Even if the Sox win me back there is no way I'm dropping that kind of cash for Bud Light, a measurable portion of which invariably gets spilled on the trek back to my cheap seats. I'd rather go golfing.

The only time I feel it's reasonable is at airports just because I really like having a buzz while flying and craft beer at most airports is pretty rare. Other than that, yeah I pregame as much as possible before concerts and only buy a beer or two if there are some half decent options.

It's always amusing to see people turn their nose up at $20 6pks, but have no issue dropping $6+ on a 22oz bomber.

For me, price is always considered. Sometimes, I choose to ignore my considerations, though. I typically steer toward 6 packs and cases since the price per ounce is absurdly cheaper compared to most 22oz offerings.

Pretty simple: Dropping $20 on something you don't like or $6? Not that amusing at all...

I've been priced out at most sporting events. Not complaining. Just don't feel like dropping $7-10 on a BMC beer (stadiums in Chicago SUCK in terms of craft selections). I'd rather have a couple good beers before the event, either at a local bar or parking lot, then sober up and be the DD.

As far as at liquor stores, I have a hard time paying more than $12 for a sixer. That rules out Sculpin, which I didn't think warranted anything near the $15 price tag. I max out around $7.99 for a bomber, unless I want to pick up one for a special occasion. In that case, I'll usually splurge for a FFF overpriced bomber.

In the scenario described by the OP--at a show/sporting event/etc--price isn't really a factor because the one and only factor that matters to me is the beer. In other words, I don't care if that Labatt Blue costs $2 or $9, I'm not likely to buy it.

On the other hand, if I run into a beer that sounds good for $10-12 at a ballpark, I'll pay it. For example, last weekend I went to a Royals game. Most of the stands have your standard BMC products, but there are two bars that have a wider selection. One has their stuff on tap and mixes in a Goose Island IPA and Leinenkugel Oktoberfest amongst the BMC and "crafty" stuff, and the other is a full-on bar, with a small collection of craft cans/bottles available. In this case, the full bar had tallboys of NB Fat Tire, Ranger and Shift, as well as bottles of Stone. I didn't go for the Stone (because I wasn't sure if they were going to pour it into a cup and wanted to be able to walk around), but the tallboys of NB were $10 each. I would gladly pay that price over the $5 tallboys of Coors and Miller most people were walking around with.

The place that price begins to factor in for me is managing my weekly/monthly beer purchases, rather than in highly specific situations where I'm at the whim of whatever the venue or restaurant has to offer. In other words, price only matters to me when I can control for beer quality--at a stadium, high cost is the inevitable trade-off for getting a good beer. At a liquor store, that doesn't have to be the case.

    I preface by saying: I am a cheap p***k'

In a restaurant - $6 (bottle or draft)

In a store - $3 (12 oz bottle or can)

At a sporting event: I buy overpriced water

I have no problem finding things I want to drink

I went to an I-Cubs game recently and the gal next to me spent $7.50 for a tall-boy of Bud Margarita-chata-whatever it's called. I walked by the craft beer cooler and it was $7 for a regular can of Moose Drool. I stayed sober that game. It's rediculous when beer costs more than parking.
