They briefly mentioned the craft beer industry on CNBC this morning. They said that it had grown from 5% of the volume of the total US beer market last year to 5.7% this year. That's a pretty nice gain, but still only a tiny share of what the bigger companies control.

The article did mention that there are close to 2,000 breweries in the US right now as well.

We'll eventually hit a ceiling, but we don't know when that is. More beer options on shelves or at bars isn't a bad thing. As long as this market keeps growing, you can be sure more breweries will be in opening. For now, I say we just enjoy it while we can.

Hello. Well they did shoot an entire season of BrewMasters. I think it was 13 shows, maybe more. Of course they only aired 6 before the big bad wolf told the Discovery channel to stop airing it or they would cut their advertising on their channel. There's a good chance they will release it in the future as a DVD series, it's really only a question of when.

I love it. I discovered craft beer just before I turned 21 (about this time last year). Didn't really like it much until my birthday when I decided to try a new beer everyday for a week. I've been hooked since.

agreed there's a contraction coming. below 14th and above canal i can think of five growler/bottle shops, two of them having opened this past winter. craft beer, as always, will survive, but i'm not convinced all five will be here in 3 years.

Even breweries which have survived independently for years are not always safe. Whether we're speaking of natural disasters (see Dixie Brewery) or a future contracting market, we really don't know how the market for breweries will be in the next ten years.

It exploded when people started trading on this site and waiting in line the day before Darkness, KBS, Hunaphu's, or any other once yearly, 1st come 1st serve release started happening.

    At least I think so.

    Cheers!

More and more people realized they didn't really like the taste of nearly frozen piss in their mouth.

In 2009 I saw GI BCBS sit on the shelves forever. And at one bar the manager gave them to me for free just so he could get it out of his inventory. Wow how much things have changed....

This exact same thing happened with me and my circle of friends and most recently my old man, who isn't a big drinker but has been really diggin the craft brews lately.

I think much of the "when" depends on where you live.

Probably the ceiling will be around 15% or so; that's a guess based on what's happened here.In general people have shown a preference for blandish easy drinking beer over characterful and demanding brews. That's why pale lagers are the dominant beer style the world over.

    In 2010 it got stupid.

In 2009 there was PtE on the shelf whenever I wanted it with no limits, come to think of i,t there were never any limits on bottles. Alpine Great and Expo Hoppiness were distributed to my local shop in 09. In 2009 PtY would go on tap somewhere and stay on tap for up to a week depending on place.
I got BCBS off the shelf in 09 at my local Bevmo in CA. They haven't even sent any of it to our state since then.

09 BCBS is the exact beer I think of when it comes to the quick growth of craft beer. There's a store in Mass. that I frequent as it's no too far from my parents house in Southern NH and I remember going in there about once and month and seeing that beer sit on the shelf until I finally grabbed a 4 pack around August/September 2010. Thats 9-10 months after it was released and there was still a few left on the shelf. Never saw any of the 2010 or 2011 release at any of the stores in Mass that I visit and I was paying close attention to the release both times.

Hello. On Amazon you can only buy 5 episodes, which is all that was shown on Discovery. If I am not mistaken Discovery actually aired 6. In any case, as I mentioned, they actually shot and produced an entire season, but after AB InBev put their foot down and 'demanded' the channel stop airing the show or they would cut their advertising, it left at least another 7 or 8 episodes in the can and on the shelf. I think they may either be waiting for a contractual obligation to expire or something like that, then they will either air all shows on another channel or sell them online or as a DVD or all of the above. As I mentioned before, it's only a question of when that will happen, not if.

Soon the market will be flooded with crappy beer by people trying to cash in without a real passion of the product just like it was to an extent in the 90s. This will lead to a second craft bubble popping where only the best cash positioned breweries will survive.
