Yes - half the time I do that even when there is silverware.

I always ask for a glass (or take one). Always.

But the way I ask differs depending on setting. For example, I have a colleague whom with I plan specific tastings, and know that he has only one snifter, so I generally bring my snifter over for those specific events.

If I am not given a glass with my beer in a restaurant, I ask politely for a glass (hoping it's not chilled).

I have had wives of friends be offended when I ask for a glass, but I really don't care because when I am having a good craft beer, even at a friend's house, it's all about me and my experience, even if I want to talk to buddies about how they enjoy the beer we're having. After a recent visit to a friend's house, his wife went out and bought beer glasses shortly after my visit.

At my girlfriend's college graduation party, I brought two 6-packs: Two Hearted and Centennial IPA (I had the prescience to realize I'd have to deal with Summer Shandy and Bud Light; but did not foresee the Guinness cans!). At any rate, this "gesture" was not taken the way I intended (I honestly thought/hoped those two beers would provide really good examples of IPAs that would be suitable for novices), and I was promptly told upon my arrival that "no, there was not any room for my beer in any of the coolers". I put a few bottles in a cooler anyway, and when they were cold enough to drink, I was audacious enough to require a glass. When one was not forthcoming from the host, I asked my girlfriend for a glass and was told, "help yourself". Later that evening, someone asked "why the glass?"

At a Bar I ask for a glass, then I pee in the corner, then I ask for a urinal
At a friends house? They know better

You would really not come back to a bar because the server forgot to give you glass? Politely ask for a glass, enjoy your beer and lighten the fuck up. It's stuff like this that gives the craft beer crowd the reputation for being a bunch of stuck up pretentious tools.

Assuming we are talking about a party or get together at someone's house? If there are wine drinkers around and they are drinking from glasses I will ask for a glass or use a wine glass. If it is a red solo cup sort of affair, I'll use the red solo cup. I always try to avoid drinking from the bottle
No one expects wine drinkers to drink from the bottle, right?

I'm not talking about an average, run of the mill bar that doesn't serve anything worth drinking. However, if I'm paying a premium for beer at a bar that specializes in craft brews, I expect that that premium will include the amenities that go along with it. In the same respect that I would not return to a $300 a night hotel if the small details weren't properly addressed. I am paying a premium for service.

That isn't pretentiousness. That is expecting the service you pay for. As I said, this isn't exclusive to the beer world; this is a truth for all service industries.

That being said, I would give the bar a second chance. But, if the trend continued...yes, I would spend my money elsewhere.

I ask for the glass if at a bar or restaurant, but if a friend kindly offers me a nice beer without a glass, I don't usually complain. Good craft beer still tastes damn good out of the bottle, especially when it is free.

Just politely ask for a glass. I've never had a problem doing that.

I usually try to ask for a glass as I'm ordering the beer, like "Oh, can I have a glass with that...." but if I don't do that and they bring just the bottle I'll ask for one..."Is there any chance I can get a glass to pour this in?".

In places I know are not likely to bring a glass, I ask right as I order a beer for it. I don't really care about iced or not and always say no if they offer it cold. Having said that, the only times I have been insistent, and made to ask for a glass twice when they forget it, are when the only thing I will drink on the menu is that left over Guinness from St Paddy's Day with the rocket widget in the can or bottle - You just cannot drink that straight out! No NO NO!

When people use the bathroom they dont have to use toilet paper, but its a really good idea..
Thats my analogy for drinking a good beer w/o a glass.

Why is it "complaining" to ask for a glass? Is it complaining if you're eating at a friend's house and ask for a napkin? Or fork?
