"OR a regular 10 gal mash tun, IMHO...I realize there are some massive mash tuns out there, but for the rest of us "marginally endowed", double-sparging is almost a necessity...AND accomplished safely with the proper ph sparge water."

I did not mean to not sparge at all, I meant after your mash you add your batch sparge water and sparge, no need to repeat this action, once the wort gravity hits~1.010 the chance of Tannin extraction out weighs any volume addition IMHO. Not to say you cannot, I just don't advise it. I mash in a 52 qt Coleman cooler, if I load it up with 18-20 lbs of grain, yes a multiple sparge may be needed, but not for 8-10 lbs of grain.

edit: however if your 10lbs of grain is completely filling your mash tun, then you need a bigger mash tun.

My bad...I'm doing med/low gravity 10 GAL batches in a 10 gal mash tun...you are right...single sparges for 5 gal batches in a 10 gal mash tun should almost never be a problem. Cheers
