You'll be able to get it a lot easier when they open the Stowe brewery, by the sounds of it.

    FTFY, you meant PLINY right???

Pliny has higher IBU and same ABV and came before Heady Topper

While the adjustment was a step in the right direction for styles... it's not a good calculation for comparing styles.

I explained why to the Bros, but was rejected.

May I suggest one alteration: make the minimum rating per style the same requirement for the top 250.

    (#) = m (minimum number of ratings)

For the Top 250 (57) specifically -- While (57) makes sense due to all the new beers coming out so frequently, it doesn't really level the playing field for the top 250 or by state as you successfully did with separate categories... in theory if (57) was the average # of ratings across all styles, you're essentially saying you need less than average ratings for an IPA (<128) to be considered, but more than average ratings for an English Pale Ale (>38) to be considered, which makes it extremely easy for IPAs & Imperial Stouts (or any style with m over 57), but harder for the more obscure styles even though there may be great beers in those styles. Your new algorithm is great for styles, but doesn't translate equally into overall 'top' lists, unless you keep the same standard.

Example: If the IPA category requires (138) ratings to be considered for top IPAs, I would suggest that same minimum to be required to be part of the top 250, to top beers of state, etc. where you are comparing two beers of different styles. Currently an IPA that doesn't meet the 138 ratings to be in the top IPA list could in fact make the top 250 list simply because it has >57 ratings, conversely an English Pale ale that could be a top English Pale, may not even be listed in the overall top 250 because it has <57 ratings.

Well, at least you give it a try. Some things click and some don't. Frankly I don't know what the reasons are for not wanting to make style scores comparable but have learned to live with it by simply ignoring the 250 list and by focusing only the list for a particular style when making up a shopping list of things I might want to try.

I love VT IPAS. IMO Heady is not the tops Second Fiddle, by Fiddle Head brewery is NĂºmero Uno, then sip of sunshine, but only in cans, then tribute by 14th star, then Heady. The Hype machine has made Heady what it is

I realize that allowing ratings without a review encourages BAs to participate (less work), but I agree that giving 5's or 2's for a beer with no comments just isn't helpful to the rating system.

To all the people that want to hate Heady, why? Is it just because it's the best? Is it a similar issue that people have with the patriots? Some people feel very strongly about it and it fascinates me.

By the way, it will never be overtaken. NEVER! :grinning:

All Heady proves is that DIPA is the favored beer style on this site. That is it. That is all.

Why do people keep saying that Heady isn't the best beer in Vermont then mention Sip of Sunshine by Lawsons? Ya know, Lawsons Double Sunshine is actually in the top 10 while Sip of Sunshine is far behind. Then there's the fact that Sip of Sunshine is brewed in Connecticut, sorry to break it to you. I think Sip of Sunshine is a bit underrated myself, but the fact that Heady Topper is a double IPA and the other top 5 beers are all stouts should tell ya something. Heady is the breakthrough double IPA, a perfection of the style so to speak.

Right. It's like 80 percent as good as Abrasive and just a little less drinkable in a lamer can. ; )

And even Abrasive doesn't stand head and shoulders anymore. There just too many great IPAs now. Heady had it's day but it's long past.

The thing is, heady topper is really great, and it available year round. So the ratings will continue to pile. Though people may argue kbbs, proprietors, double barrel hunaphu Are better beers, they will never top the list, because 1) they are typically one-off beers that become "retired", disqualifying them, and 2) are too limited to garner the rapid ratings.

Some highly available beer that has yet to be brewed will be the only one to top it. Unless the numbers start to slip a little and one of those huge whales edges it out for like two minutes.
