While looking at the description of the style on the page for Altbier (http://beeradvocate.com/beer/style/86), I read the line "Sticke" is a stronger version of an Altbier, thus a bit more malty and hoppy to boot." Where can I find this Sticke? Loving altbiers, I think this is something I would really enjoy. Is it a whole other style or is it a style within a style (like Barrel Aged Imperial Stouts)?

Does anyone know a brew that is a good representation of Sticke?

Also, how do you pronounced "Sticke?"

    Thanks in advance!

I've only ever seen Uerige's, but it was crazy old and I didn't want to pick it up. I haven't had it in a long time, but I think Long Trail calls their Double Bag one.

    And I believe it's pronounced "Shteeck-eh"

I had Long Trail's Triple bag and I found it to be a triple alt rather than a "strong ale" which it is labeled as.
I would recommend it if your a fan of balanced yet strong Alt beers.

Yeah, these Stickes are supposed to be had pretty fresh. The only time I've seen Uerige, it was about a year old and underwhelming. You should be able to find them in some good bottle shops in the import section.

I've only had Sticke once and it was at the Uerige brewpub in Dusseldorf.. Just graduated college and my brother and I decided to tag along with my dad on his business trip - had some time to kill on day one so we walked into Uerige and it just happened to be the third Tuesday in October - one of 2 days Sticke is allegedly tapped (the other's in January). One of my better beer memories so Uerige gets my vote. Also, it's more of "a style within a style" and not that drastically different than their flagship Alt.

    Cheers!

Twisted Pine Big Sticke was recently released and is fantastic. It's the only Sticke I've ever had, though.

According to Twisted Pine it's pronounced "Schtick-uh".

There is a brewery in Makota Mn called Mankato Brewing. They produce a Sticke called Stickem. It's year round and fucking delicious. Only available in Mn as far as I know however. Trade for it or maybe see if France 44 Liquor can ship you some.

Bit of advice. If you see Zum Uerige Sticke or Alt in an American (or Canadian, UK, Australian etc) store don't buy them. When bottled Uerige's beers have no more than a one month lifespan. Drinking them at the source in Dusseldorf is the only option.

I did have a "fresh" keg of the reg uerige that hit the spot, seemed kinda funky but it was bursting with noble hops and went down like water.

O'Fallon Sticke It To The Man and Sam Adams Longshot Derf's Secret Alt are the only Stickes I've had. O'Fallon's was extremely boozy and not enjoyable at all. The SA Longshot was pretty good.

Sticke and doppelsticke are not as good as fresh Dusseldorf Alt IMO, bigger and hoppier don't always equal better though Uerige sticke is not as hoppy balnce wise as the regular alt. Uerige Alt is an amazing beer fresh, but bottles rarely are unfortunately.

Third Tuesday in October is fast approaching, make plans now! Uerige's Sticke (Shtick-uh) is the only one I've had, and it was on a Sticke Tag at the Uerige pub. I would agree with what others have said regarding buying an old bottle - Uerige gives their normal beer a two month shelf life, I think.

I think the other Düsseldorf breweries also have two Sticke days per year but I haven't given them a try yet.

Awesome, thanks for all the responses and suggestions. That brew from New Hampshire (Altittude) may be something I can land with ease. Thanks again!

Long Trail Double Bag should be easily available to you as well. It's the only Long Trail beer that I really like.

For a standard Altbier you should give the Mission Amber a shot- it's the first one I've had in a while that's gotten me jazzed about the style again.
