Long Trail is one of my favorite breweries. They got me started on craft and I have always loved them. Double Bag is a go-to fo rme in many situations. Triple bag is damn fine too!

I've also had it in Dusseldorf and it was quite good.

The OP might be interested in reading the description of a Sticke Alt at the German Beer Institute: http://www.germanbeerinstitute.com/Sticke_Alt.html

Executive Summary: “The brew is full-bodied and well-hopped, with a surprising balance between bitterness and nutty-malty sweetness, overlaid by strong notes of chocolate and roasted, but not acrid, malt.”

I bolded the verbiage of well-hoppedsince I personally think that is a critical aspect of a Sticke Alt.

The OP asked: “Does anyone know a brew that is a good representation of Sticke?” A number of folks provided the correct answer: Drink a Sticke Alt in Dusseldorf at the Uerige brewpub either on the third Tuesday in January and the third Tuesday in October. A reasonable alternative would be “another Düsseldorf brewpub, Schumacher, serves a similar brew, also twice a year, which it calls Latzenbier. At Schumacher, the Latzenbier dates are usually around the middle to end of September 19 as well as towards the end of November.”

I do not know of any current US craft brewed versions of a Sticke Alt this is comparable to the Uerige Sticke Alt. I have had Long Trail Double Bag a number of times but that beer does not meet the criteria of “well-hopped”.

A very good US version of a Sticke Alt that was available in the past was Victory Ten Year Alt (a beer brewed to celebrate Victory’s ten year anniversary). A description of Ten Year Alt:

“The Victory version of this ‘secret’ offering is inspired by the rich brewing heritage of the alt beers. It is a dark ale exhibiting the love of hops and mastery of malt that Victory has displayed for 10 years. Initially assertive with spicy hops, Ten Years Alt concludes ever so comfortably in rich, roasted malts and burnished hop character.”

Victory has periodically brewed this beer subsequent to their 10th year anniversary: a review was posted on Rate Beer in May 2011 and on BA on August 2010.
