Where does old beer go to die?

I couldn't find any threads that specifically address this so here goes. As I stroll through the aisles of seemingly endless beer choices, I have been wondering what happens to the old and outdated stuff. I have of course seen some on the shelves at times but I have to believe that distributors (some?) pull some of it at some point, at least to make room for new stuff. So where does it go? Any Brewers, shop owners, or distributors have insight? Thanks.

I am not in the industry but have heard that distributors write it off and "dispose of it" in the trash (ie gifting an attentive trash guy) or offer it to staff.

IPA's don't actually get old. They just turn into barleywines!
