I'll be making a trip up to Ann Arbor from Toledo tomorrow to look for some beer not really available in the Toledo area. Any suggestions on where I should look. I've heard Whole Food has a good craft beer section. Any suggestions? Or ideas on what kinda stuff I'll find in Ann Arbor not readily available in Toledo?

I typically recommend two stops for out-of-towners: First stop should be the Wine Seller or Plum Market, to get most of what you're probably interested in at reasonable prices. After that, if there's anything you still want, go to Main Street Party (or the Beer Depot, but Main Street has more, I think) for a slightly larger selection at slightly unreasonable prices.

As for what to look for... there's a lot of overlap between Ohio and Michigan distribution, and you get way more out-of-state stuff than we do, so there's actually not much you can't get in OH besides Short's (definitely grab some Short's). You might be able to find some Kuhnhenn if you're lucky, and we get Big Sky... the list here is rather short...

Things to focus on in my experience (also from Toledo and I take the occasional Ann Arbor trip): Kuhnhenn's and Shorts (both definites) as well as any >12% beer that strikes your fancy as it is guaranteed to not be available in Ohio.

What, no. Don't give any of your money to Main Street Party Store. They price gouge on every vaguely popular limited release ($59 for CBS, lol no). Go to Plum Market, Wine Seller, Arbor Farms, Hillers, Busch's, hell even Super Liquor 4 right off the highway.

I only ended up getting a few things. I just had time to go to the Whole Foods off of 23. I got a Bear Republic Big Bear Black Stout. And a Stone Cali-Belgie. I've never seen either around Toledo. I'll be making another trip up soon to hit some of the other places you guys mentioned. Thanks guys.

Was really put off by prices at Beer Depot & especially Main Street...$5.99 for one bottle of PT5th?! I believe it was over $6/bottle for DoubleCrookedTree.

Yeah, they're pretty crazy overpriced. Consequently, though, they sometimes have things that you can't seem to find anywhere else because no one buys it up. I only go in there once every month or few, and I've definitely seen Short's releases last quite a bit longer than anywhere else (and all the Short's is kept in the walk-in fridge, which is nice). They used to have a small stock of 5+ year old Avery Mephistopheles and Samael's Ale, I think, though I never pulled the trigger on those.

Oh, and I got multiple bottles of Kuhnhenn BB4D that time a little bit got out into distribution, and that was priced same as at the brewery (though more expensive than any other store that got some).

So, yeah, I don't support them with regular business, but I'll pop in now and then in case there's something special.
