I don't think the overarching point of this study was to draw a conclusion about the data collected. The experimentalist was obviously aware of the size of the study and the limitations of the sample.

This seems to me to be the important part - the study could be carried out elsewhere across the country, the results of which could possibly aid in changing beer laws down the road (We're stuck at a 12% cap in Ohio).

Depends on how far you try to generalize the results. But then no single study in isolation ever offers much in the way of meaningful data. Whats of real interest is whether it will lead to further research. Put enough studies done in different ways, locations, etc. together in a pile you can wind up with some pretty compelling evidence.

These beers also cause people not to have health insurance.

“Some products are marketed to certain groups of people in our society,” explained Traci Toomey, the director of the University of Minnesota’s alcohol epidemiology program, who was not involved in the study. Higher-alcohol malt liquor, for example, is heavily advertised in African-American neighborhoods. “So we might want to put some controls on certain products if we find they are tied to greater risk. But how they are marketed and priced is critical information and that has been very hard to study.”

I'm not sure what to make of this passage, with her vague use of pronouns, sloppy attempt to dance around race, and baffling comment about readily available marketing and pricing data being very hard to study. I think she wants to put bottle limits on Steel Reserve in order to protect black people. That should go over well.

I think a more interesting study would have been....

Or said another way, the media still doesn't understand how to properly report research(I hope one day any news org with hire halfway decent science and research reporters). This was meant to set up a basic framework for future research on this topic, not to actually answer any questions.

Exactly. Stupidity is more likely the cause. It causes them to buy Budweiser and it causes them to do stupid shit while drinking it. My point is that I agree with your causation argument.

Sample size and location make a big difference so yes it would be tough to generalize on the population.

Michael: Uhh, you know, there isn't a hospital bar, mother.
Lucille: Well, this is why people hate hospitals.

Wait a minute, you are telling me that the beer with the largest sales far and beyond anything else also equates to the most hospital visits?! :grimacing: I kind of thought it was Lambeak Wants Blood Orange (http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/1471/89118) that was sending people to the emergency room!

Its a cheap ass vodka that the college kids drink, pretty much on par with Popov. (Don't ask how I know this, we've all been poor and in college once.)
