I have a 22 oz bottle of Victory Hop Wallop Imperial/Double IPA and a 22 oz bottle of Port Brewing Old Viscosity Ale. I just wanted to know which beer should I have first so I get the best out of both and not ruin my palate with the first one that I would not be able to taste and enjoy the second one. I say ruin in the best way, I know both beers are very good, I already had Port Old Viscosity before but I have not had Hop Wallop.
Oh, Jeez... Not that question again! Generally, very hoppy IPAs will ruin any subsequent beers in a tasting in the sense that you'll be tasting strong hops throughout. Personally, I avoid mixing IPAs and IPLs with other styles on the same day. So, yeah, Hop Wallop will ruin your palate for sure. I'm not sure if going in the other direction is any better, though. It won't wreck your palate, but you'll definitely taste HW differently after OV. In fact, if you've never had HW, you almost have to taste it first. But why in the world do you feel obligated to taste them in succession?
Hey Victor, thank you for your suggestion. I just had the OV first, and regarding your question, I feel obligated to have both tonight because it's friday and those are the only very good - oustanding two beers that I have in my fridge LOL. I will follow them up with some Bohemia Weizen from Cuauhtemoc Moctezuma Brewery in Mexico just to keep me hydrated since it is 90 degress here at 12:47 am
Was the IPA bottled today? If not, pour it down the drain and drink the Old Viscosity. It's not worth ruining your palate with and old IPA
Seriously though, I do agree with victor in a sense. These two beers are gonna be interchangable in that both are going to be strong on the palate. The best thing to do (I know this is after the fact at this point) would be to drink one and enjoy it then have some water and maybe something to eat to let your tastebuds come back to you and then drink the other with a fresh palate.
That's exactly what I'm going to do podunkparte, It is not that late here in Mexicali, Mexico, it is 12:58 am so I have time to relax, drink some water, eat something and then have the Hop Wallop before going to bed
Wow Victor, that Mother of All Storms seems really good. I only had two barley wines, Stone Old Guardian Belgo-Barley Wine and the Sierra Nevada Big Foot. I will try to seek for more beers of this style
I'm assuming you had a fresh Bigfoot. In my opinion that beer is considerably better after a good amount of age. I've had some bottles over 10 years old that were absolutely amazing, though completely different beers. The bitter hoppiness completely falls out of them and you get a really nice caramel and "old" flavor. It's also nice that Bigfoot is easy to find and not very expensive so grab yourself a 4-pack or 2 and forget about them in a dark closet for a while and drink a bottle every 6 months or so and enjoy. And yeah, this Mother of all Storms is delicious.
I will do that any time Victor. Grab a 4 pack, drink one and every 6 ot 8 months drink another to see how they develop.
