I've used both types and while the one on the left is easier to use, I didn't experience any difference in the quality of the seal as far as I could tell.

The advantage of the bottle capper on the right is that it readily works with bottles of varying heights (if you have bottles of varying heights). The bench capper will work with different bottle heights - you just need to readjusts it.

    Cheers!

P.S. I have used the one on the right many, many years so it is my preferred capper.

Larry, I have a capper that looks like the one on the right, and at one point I also thought the caps were not going on right. I noticed that the 'dome' part that holds the cap in place before crimping was a bit loose so I screwed it in tightly and I have not had a problem since. Check to see if your's is loose and maybe that will fix your problem too.

Both will work well on bottles. Neither is particularly good at sealing kegs. I own the wing-lever model and used it for about 8 years before kegging. Perhaps there is a slight disadvantage in that it requires two hands on the capper leaving zero hands available to the stabilize the bottle. This could have been an issue for me in 1 of 10000 attempts?

I use the one on the right, and it works well for me.*

*Unless I'm capping re-used Paulaner bottles. For some reason those little bastards won't stay steady for the life of me.

I have a red baron wing style capper, similar to the one on the right. I only had issues with it when trying to cap some old crooked stave bottles. The neck essentially exploded on me. Oops.

I have the right one. After i cap i turn the bottle 1/2 a turn and recap. Not sure if it's necessary but it's a habit.

I have the two handed model on the right and I've never had an issue with it but I also don't use it that much because I keg 99% of what I brew.

I have the Emily capper on the right (I just switched from the metal version) and it's amazing. Keeps my bottles perfectly carbonated (unlike the metal one). I mean...it's made by Ferrari it's a good product.

I have the standard wing capper on the right and haven't had any problems with it. Stubby short neck bottles like Sierra Nevada are a bit more difficult to cap than standard long necks. I have bottles that are several years old with no loss of carbonation or I'll effects from the cap though.

Could be the bottles you're using that are the issue. Wouldn't hurt to look at that.

I would also point out that the style of capper itself shouldn't make a difference. If the capper is defective, damaged, or being used incorrectly, that could cause issues, but I have both styles and they work equally well.

With that said, I use the bench capper for certain bottles, and the wing capper for all others, as it's easier not having to adjust for the height of each type of bottle. The bench capper comes in handy for bottles with short (vertically) lips, which the wing capper has trouble "grabbing" to get enough leverage. I find short, stubby bottles tend the be this way more often, and Dos Equis bottles are all this way. If I use the wing capper on one of these small-lipped bottles, the seal has never given me trouble, but I've never felt quite comfortable with the fact that it doesn't looked clamped all the way down.

Also, you probably know this, but it should be stated: do not reuse bottles with twist-off caps! They may seem okay at first, but will leak over time.

ps. I think they both work great. I use the twin level style the most. Quick and easy.

I have both, used the wing capper (right) for a while (was too cheap to buy a bench top capper (left). Now that I have the one on the left, it is much easier to use, but it is more expensive. So if money is a concern, I'd go with the one on the right. If you can spend the money, the one on the left is nicer and worth it (imho) if you have the money.

***I have found this to be true for a lot of things in homebrewing. The more expensive versions are better. They are worth the extra money to some and not to others. A lot of it seems to come down to how much spare money do you have? If you have the extra money, you will usually not regret buying the more expensive version.
