Fellow BA's hoping for some feedback on July 4th weekend visit. I'll be staying in Santa Ana. Only breweries I've been to in the area are Barley Forge and The Bruery. I've got 1 day either Saturday or Sunday where the missus is taking our 1 year old and I have free reign to sample a few breweries. From the research I've done there's a couple options close by that I'm hoping for advice on. I am low key and don't want to deal with any crazy line madness or crowds. A nice quiet brewery to sample is what I'm after. I don't want to chase whales. I'm a hop head but I enjoy all styles as well.

Option 1: Anaheim - Noble Aleworks, Bottle Logic and Valiant. I wouldn't do Bruery as I've been there before. This is the "best" list of breweries but it seems like Bottle Logic has a big release this weekend so I'm worried about major crowds.

Option 2: Huntington / Seal Beach - Four Sons, Riip and Beachwood in seal beach. Four Sons has ok reviews, Riip good reviews but few beers on tap. Beachwood is definitely a place on the bucket list.

Option 3: San Clemente - Pizza Port, Left Coast and Artifex. Not real pumped about left coast because I get their distribution and never been wowed by them. Pizza port I also get distribution of their core line up.

Option 4: Irvine / Santa Ana - The Good Beer Company, Cismontane, Barley Forge. Stay in Santa Ana and don't go anywhere. I'd do barley forge again, liked that place. Other two both seem different and interesting.

If anyone has recommendations on a bar/restaurant that lets you do samplers in the area, that would be awesome as well. Native Sons Alehouse seems pretty good but I'm not sure if they let you do tasters. Thanks for the help BAs!

These options are tough. Can you mix it up? Depending on transportation issues, I'd suggest starting at at Riip or Beachwood (never been to Seal Beach, though), then head to Noble. Sounds like Bottle Logic will be nuts. I'm probably waiting till later to pick up bottles. Noble will be chill. No Angels games. Then, The Good Beer Company. You could even take Uber or Lyft to/from Noble, but definitely The Good Beer Company.

If you're going to stay in Santa Ana and do TGBC, try Native Sons Alehouse and The Playground (across the street from Native Sons).

Problem with option 2 & 3 is that many of those breweries are near the beach ... 4th of July weekend & beach = BITCH TRAFFIC. I'd rather fight crowds at Bottle Logic and to a lesser extent Noble than sit in gnarly traffic.

You could do Good Beer (all sours FYI), Noble and Valiant if you want to skip BL. Actually I'm thinking if you hit BL on Sunday and not release day (Saturday), it'll be much more chill ... especially if you go right when they open.

I think you should do option #4. I would change it up though and do Cismontane, Barley Forge and Iron Press.

Cis IMO has been quietly killing it lately, I feel their stuff is underrated. Their IPAs (Double Rainbow, Hop Dumptser, Coulter) are solid on tap. Low key vibe at the SNA location and the staff is always friendly.

Iron Press is a restaurant (specializing in waffle dishes) nearby the area of these two breweries and consistently has nice variety on their rotating tap list. You can grab some food (recommend the tots) and flights here.

Thanks for the recommendations! Iron Press does look pretty cool...may have to do that. Cismontane only thing I find frustrating is can't find what they have on tap. Tried a bunch of different searches but even taphunter doesn't have anything current.

Don't miss Noble. In my opinion they are making the best beer in Orange County currently.

I second Iron press! I had my engagement photos there, lol.

You should definitely visit Valiant. It's low key and I pretty good.

Based on the info you've provided, option #1 is the best choice. Enjoy!

They have a tasting room in Santa Ana. Within a few minutes of a few other breweries.

Oh wow. I thought it was only in RSM. Please disregard my previous statement.

Sounds like a nightmare with 4th of July weekend traffic ... busting down the 5 to PP is going to suck ... then long ass drive up the 405 to Beachwood :grimacing:

I'd choose option 1 if it weren't this weekend. While I personally don't think the breweries in option 4 are the best in SoCal, staying in one place and limiting driving as much as possible would be worth it. Traffic on the local freeways is already pretty bad and this weekend will be crazy. Nevertheless, wherever you go will have good beer so have a good weekend! Cheers.

agree. driving could be kind of ass that weekend. though possibly worth it if you're going to places you haven't been

from Santa Ana you will have some good train / metro options if you want. train ride to San Clemente could be fun. then could take it all the way back to Noble. also can easily take the metro from Santa Ana to beachwood. if you're feeling adventurous you could train it down to Modern Times. brewery is walkable from the train station. on your way back you can look out and see the traffic on the 5 freeway while enjoying a Stone IPA (or something to-go from MT) and looking at the Pacific Coast

Option 1: I'd still consider adding Bruery, while you might have already been there, the selections available and also the variety is very hard to beat.

Option 2: This one I think you could make a low key family event. Four sons is forgettable, but Riip is the opposite corner of an intersection from the beach. Beers might be limited, but they're all small batches, so all the IPA's are fresh. Go there around sunset when most of the beach crowd is leaving, grab some grub from Secret Spot (super mex is temp. closed) and you can eat by the window watching the sunset. They've also redone the patio very recently, which while you can't drink out there, looks much nicer than the construction for past few months. Beachwood is slightly farther from the beach, but no view, but still a great option.

Option 3: On a regular weekend those freeways are rough any time after 8am. A+ for effort but this just isn't smart.

Option 4: Good beer co is decent (I feel they under carbonate their beers a little), also 4th St. market a few blocks away is a great food court option. I *think* GBC allows outside food, but not sure if it'll travel that well from the previously mentioned spot. I haven't been to Cismontane, but barley forge is a nice place to visit. Parking can be rough as The Camp across the street gets a lot of visitors.

I'm with #4. Good Beer is a rad place especially if you like sours, plus walking distance to great food and beer places (as mentioned: Playground, Native Son), also Wursthaus, Copper Door, Chapter One, and if you want some good English Pub fare: Olde Ship (down the street a bit). Take Lyft/Uber to Noble for sure, other than that FUCK DRIVING this weekend! Good luck. Cheers!

Before I recommend a "beer route" for people inquiring, I always gotta ask...how will you be getting around? I mean, if you're options include 3-4 brewery stops i hope to hell you're not driving yourself. Easy for me to say since I live about 2 miles away from Noble and will split a $10 Uber fare with anybody I'm with.

Option 4 makes the most sense if you're within walking distance.

If you don't plan on doing your own driving, then option 1 is the obvious choice i'd recommend. Noble and BL are roughly 4 miles apart and Valiant is smack in the middle. Logistically, it makes the most sense outside of option 4, and it covers your preferred styles the best.

Also, if you're walking distance, or cheap uber ride, to the Santa Ana train station, then i'd recommend Option 5 ...
A one day Metrolink "unlimited" train pass costs $10.

From the Santa Ana location do the following...
Stop 1, Fullerton, walk across the street to Bootlegger's
Stop 2, Anaheim, walk across the street to Noble Ale Works and then Golden Road
Stop 3, Orange, walk across the street to several eateries with plenty of craft beer, (Haven, Smoqed, Provisions...there are others..)
Stop 4, Return to Santa Ana
