So my work is having a Memorial day open bar at an awful dance club in Midtown. For those unfamiliar with NYC, Midtown is a cultural wasteland filled with the most awful people in all of NYC. I do like my coworkers, but also have rarely socialized with them outside of work.

In my neighborhood, 7 minutes walk from my house, at a bar I like quite a bit, is a Stone event with this taplist.

    Allagash White
    Chelsea Sunset Red
    Climax ESB
    Coney Island Mermaid Pilsner
    Doc’s Pear Cider
    Dogfish Head Namaste
    Fisherman’s Brew
    Rogue “Nitro” Shakespeare Stout
    Sixpoint Brownstone
    Sixpoint Righteous Ale
    Sly Fox Maibock
    Stone Arrogant Bastard (cask)
    Stone Cali-Belgique IPA
Stone Double Bastard with Toasted Oak 2012
    Stone “Double Dry Hopped” Ruination
    Stone “Espresso” Imperial Russian Stout
    Stone IPA
    Stone Levitation Ale
    Stone Mixtape Vol. 4
    Stone Oak Smoked Old Guardian
    Stone Smoked Porter
    Stone Sublimely Self Righteous Ale
    Stone Vertical Epic 10.10.10
    Stone Vertical Epic 11.11.11
    Victory Scarlet Fire
    Weyerbacher Old Heathen (cask)

So I'm going to the Stone event, much to the confusion of my coworkers who are shocked I would pass up an open bar. Personally I'd rather pay for beers I'll like than drink crap for free in an environment that sucks.

Am I crazy or would you choose the same?

Way to insult the tourists there, buddy. I dunno- I find the whole carpetbagging "never go above 14th Street" crowd to be just as insufferable .

This situation doesn't seem to be as straightforward as you phrased it in your poll, though. I'd probably find a way to socialize with my coworkers, just a little bit, in this case. Can't you do both, or would the Stone event be over if you just stayed at the work thing for only an hour or so?

Nothing against tourists, it's the people who choose to go out in that part of town I generally dislike. There was some exaggeration there, I do like Rattle and Hum and the Pony Bar. But dance club? Nah.

My workplace is also very high turnover, and I myself probably won't be there much longer. I don't see a huge need to worry about relationship building beyond what I already do at work. Plus I have non work friends going to the event.

Maybe a bit, but I wonder how much of an oddball I am sometimes. Sometimes you need to know there are others out there like yourself.

Hit a good beer bar before the open bar deal, show your face at the open bar for an hour, and then hit up another good beer bar. I know it wasn't an option, but it's not gonna look good on you to skip the open bar if all your coworkers are attending...and trust me, I know there's nothing worse in the world than an optional-mandatory work social event.

    Just joking and exaggerating, myself.

OK- in that case I'd just go to the Stone event as well. Here's best wishes and hoping that you find something a little more solid next time, though.

Beer is like a Hooker, you might be able to find a Free "Open Bar" one but is it really worth it? I would rather pay for the quality any day.

The only reason I'd go out with your coworkers would be to try to network with boss or whoever to get promotion/raise. Unless I was good friends with some of them. In any case I would convince them to go to the Stone event

I'd drink a high volume of Brooklyn Lagers, SNPA, SABL, or whatever craft beer they have at the free beer place.

If its such a high turn over then would you be missed for very long? If your not in the dance club/cheap bar crowed then go where you will enjoy yourself.

Thats an awesome tap list, but I would go for the night of free drinks and socialize with people you dont normally socialize with. Sounds fun.

I've rarely been in this situation but the few times I've been with friends at generic Boston clubs I've been at least been able to get Sam Adams or Harpoon (maybe Brooklyn in your case?). Stone is a great brewery but I'm guessing there are a number of bars in NYC you could go to on any night of the year and be just as satisfied. Plus, it it's truly an 'open' bar and mixed drinks are included then you might as well get really effed up with a bunch of co-workers you don't care about in the off chance you make a good networking opportunity with a higher-up in the company.

Nothing wrong with doing both, especially after considering one of the options is free. Stop by and say hello!

Get a few good quality ones. Move on to the new location and get a few free ones, just play it safe. Then head back for a really nice one at the previous, or new location. Pass out happy.

How could this plan possibly backfire?

The more important question is why are you on BA instead of convincing your superiors to hold the open bar at the Stone event...

Seems like a rather simple solution, no?

What time should I meet you there? I'm a train ride away and they have Mixtape 4 and Dry Hopped Ruination!? Why don't I know about this place? Fuck your co-workers. Lol.

You listed 26 beers. Are you going to pay and drink them all? If not, then the list is useless.

Go mix with your coworkers and stop being a tool. You can always skip out early and invite them to join you.
