Stone event for beer, open bar for anything else.

As others have suggested, hit the open bar for a few laughs and a few free Brooklyn lagers, Sierra Nevadas, and Sam Adams. Then, hijack the cool co-workers to go check out the Stone event. Everybody wins. Added bonus, if enough people are into the Stone thing your office party may be at that bar next year. Advocacy at it's best.

If you had said you co-workers blow then I'd say head to the Stone thing solo, but it seems like you work with some folks who you're down with, so follow the above advice.

Am I crazy or would you choose the same?

Can you say no brainer or I had a sudden case of the sniffles?

I say, since you said high turnover, hit the free joint first, see which chick is the one you want to spend more time with (you know what I mean) and say "you know, free drinks is one thing, let me take you somewhere where you and I can enjoy some quality time over some quality drinks" and see where that goes. Either you get "sure, let's go" or "uuhhhh, nooooo" or "Hey, I hear there is a Stone takeover at ______, do you like good beer?" eithe way, decision is easy.

I would "enjoy" a few beers with my coworkers. You can always follow up with what you want on the way home

Go to the party and tell the co-workers that you'd REALLY like to hang out with outside of work about the "after party" at the Stone event. If they're far from home just make sure you show them a good time.

Yep, I'm in the do both and recruit crowd, but, with a caveat. Keep yourself more sober than your colleagues. Bonus points if you lure a boss or higher up along. Proceed to mentally (and maybe physically) record drunken experiences of said colleagues. Use knowledge to manipulate work circumstances in your favor with off-hand remarks that remind them of their embarrassing experiences when they unknowingly got wrecked on high abv beer.

    I mean, Advocacy. And such.

Come on man, go with the co-workers. As another poster mentioned, I'm sure there is no shortage of Stone products in your part of the world. Pay for beer later. Get a couple free ones while you can, I'm sure there will be something worth drinking there. If it really does suck you can leave.

I hate dance clubs so my decision would be easy. On the other hand, can't you convince your boss to have this work event at the bar you like?

Calling midtown a "cultural wasteland" is a little extreme, no?

Of course the majority people here are going to vote the second option ... we're mostly introverted, hanging around on a beer forum!

...and that's fine with me. I pick the second option too.

Unless your coworkers are absolute shitbags I don't know why you wouldn't go to an open bar event and hang out. It could be fun. Plus, by not going you're now the office weirdo.

Why don't you just go to the Stone event before and grab a couple must have beers and then go to the office party?

I can't stand dance clubs and never could, but sometimes you just have to cowboy up and do something that doesn't interest you in order to be social. Yeah, your company may have a huge turnover, but that also means that you could be working with some of the same people at a different company at some point in the future (or seeking a job from one of them possibly.) Make an appearance at the work event, smooze a bit and if it's as lame as you suspect it's going to be, make your goodbyes knowing that you'll be able to finish your evening off someplace that you enjoy.

Personally, I would get a couple buddies to go to the Stone Event. Coworkers are just that, coworkers.
