Pulled some recent "bests" together for a double/imperial IPA tasting last night. Paired off "bracket style" with HT and HS getting 1st round byes. Which ones lost first? Who won? DFH 90 Minute Stone Enjoy By 4-1 Nugget Nectar Dry Dock Double IPA Green Flash Imperial HopSlam Sculpin Heady Topper Evolution Lot 6 Fegleys BrewWorks Hopsolutely WHICH ONE(s) ARE NOT WORTHY? Our "winner" was Stones Enjoy By, HOWEVER, Evolution Lot 6 actually beat Heady Topper in semi-final and would have been paired off against Stone in final match ..... but we ran out of the Lot 6 ..... so we had to match HT vs Stone ..... what would have happened in your basement?
were you comparing them in a blind taste test? I would think that were people to know what they were drinking enjoy by would get a good rating boost from the excitement of just getting to try it, in my area anyway.
Nugget Nectar is an American Amber/Red Ale according to this site btw. Looks like the tasting should be fun though. Like the bracket style scoring.
Howd Sculpin fair against everything? I wasn't crazy impressed but that was a while ago and I didnt check the date and we just got some freshies in.
Yes I think that one is across the board in taste depending on freshness. I'll only buy them if there's 3+ months left on the dating.
Why Lot 6 isn't remotely hyped is something far beyond my ability to comprehend Oh well, more for me, then.
I finally got my hands on some Sculpin from a friend....tasted it...thought to myself, "This is pretty average. What's the fuss about?" Then checked the best by date and saw that it was 2 weeks past due. Thanks "friend"....
Haven't had a number of those, but of the ones I have tried, which include: DFH 90 Minute, Green Flash Imperial, HopSlam, Sculpin and Heady Topper, Sculpin was surely the one not worthy. Felt Sculpin really was anything special.
I had "Stone's Enjoy By 4-1" on tap today and really thought it was one note. The aroma showed some nice resenous columbus hops, but it seemed to fall flat on the palate, for me at least. I am a big Stone fan (I visit the brewery at least three times a year) and had to say I was disappointed. Maybe it is different in the bottle, I need to buy one.
If it wasn't blind, you pretty much wasted your time. Consumer expectations of a brand are large influences on perceived value.
