You are looking at it from a moderation standpoint and I was looking at it from a user perspective. You guys have to do what makes sense to run the site effectively. It's your site, I am just happy to be able to play here! Cheers.

    Ridiculous.

BREWERIES that become known for awesome beer production will be able to add trade value to their beer.

Has the presence of Toppling Goliath somehow added value to every beer in Iowa?

We can and it came in handy for me the other day. I posted a trade looking for Last Snow and MBCP for 2-3 of one beer (CC B bomb). I ended up making a trade for just Last Snow so I went back and changed my title to ISO MBCP since I was stilling using the same beer to trade. That way I didn't have to start a new ISO and I didn't have to deal with people contacting me about Last Snow.

Much more than just that. Mods are looking at it from both a mod standpoint and the perspective of those users who've had enough, as nearly all moderation is a direct result of users reporting items for our attention and we listen to all of your feedback. Mods are also users, and each one has their own opinion on all of this. And then I look at it from several other perspectives, including a business one.

What's "fair"? That's part of the problem. Why not post what YOU think is fair and what YOU'RE willing to give up without letting what others think is fair sway your opinion? Place your own value on the beers you have and are looking for. Many people are too busy trying to determine what others got for their beer so they can "maximize" their return or "win". *I'm not saying you in particular.

For the record, I've posted trades that some people think are generous and others that some think are a rip off. I go more off my own values, not others. I'm not trying to win or lose a trade, just something that makes myself and trade partner happy. I could care less what other people think, it's not their beer. Although they act like it is because god forbid I make a trade that could potentially hurt the "value" of their beer.

If I post an ISO and get crickets I keep adjusting until I don't want to give up anymore then what I'm offering. You can also always ask in your ISO comments for people to pm you with whatever information you're specifically looking for.

No problem, it's a nice feature for us to have. Now when someone pm's you about it you can tell them to do it themselves, you're too busy with more important things

FWIW, I just went through the first two pages of ISO:FT threads and tried to total up the types of comments (posts after the one that started the thread). Here's the breakdown:
    Helpful: 31
    Innocuous: 11
    Threadshitting/Homerism: 1

I counted both questions and answers in the "Helpful" group (e.g. "How much was X?" and "X was $18/bottle at the brewery." count as two posts). I also counted "Closed!" posts in the Helpful group, since they help indicate what trades got done. "Innocuous" posts were things like "X is a great beer!". I only found one post that seemed like it could at all be considered homerism or threadshitting.

So...it could be because the moderators are doing an outstanding job, but at least this morning it appears that the overwhelming majority of comments in ISO:FT are either innocuous or overtly helpful.

I tend to agree with this. Granted I'm not active on the ISO/FT, but I think it would work fine if it were more like Craigslist. Put up an offer, let everyone contact via BM. If you think the dude/dudette needs help w/ his/her valuation & want to offer an opinion, shoot him/her a note.

Something is driving up the value of these beers and it's not just BA score & whether or not it's on the shelf.

BUT, I think the most useful thing would be to keep track of completed trades(not extras) so you can look up a beer & see what the most recent trades were. That will give you ALL the idea you need to come up with an offer to get the ball rolling.

I think that although there are treadshitters out there, that overall MOST users appreciate and use the comments to be helpful. I try and add information if I'm commenting on posts. Sometimes letting someone know a bit of information or asking a question helps a user get their trade done

I swear I'm not trying to pick on you  so please don't take offense.

First of all, I wouldn't take every thread that says "closed" at face value. Traders will put "closed" without specifying details such as what was added or taken away. While you may consider it helpful, take it with a grain of salt. How many times have we seen "closed" only to see another ISo with the exact same trade not get done? Perhaps it was just the right set of eyes or perhaps it didn't go down as the ISO suggested.

Most of the bottle counts, prices, etc can be found in regional forums, brewery websites, etc. While it may be easier to find that information by searching the ISO's, it's not that much harder to find it in other forums or through other search methods.

Do all the comments really matter that much? Yes, Atrial has been released 4 times, yes it was only released once last year. Do we know the total bottle numbers of each batch vs Last Snow, do we know whether someone offered a batch 1 Atrial versus a Batch 4 (which has more "value"?), what about which batch tastes better? it can go on and on and on. For fucks sake, just trade the two Atrial if you want 2 last snow or vice versa. If not, pm the guy telling him what you are willing to trade. It's that simple.

Not sure about Iowa, but I think that's happened in Vermont for sure.

Indeed, but that only highlights the lunacy of ascribing value to a beer simply on region, rather than brewery reputation/history, etc.

Wasn't this sort of the theme of the Judgement of Paris/wine debates of the 70s and onward -- that origin alone doesn't tell you a whole helluva lot about (the quality of) a wine?

Right. Trade your Atrial for a Last Snow and ask the guy who spent less money to throw in a couple locals to make up the difference. mugatucrazypills.gif

After reading through this thread, it reminds me why I hate beer. Beer being the nebulous term for the trading community at large.

And yeah, after looking at that thread, it makes a bit more sense as to why that OP made the comments that he made on my previous ISO for Last Snow. A bit self-serving, but sadly it's what I'm used to these days. Comments tend to be 50/50 in terms of helpful/useless, and I just roll with it. Take the high road.

    Again, I hate beer.

I honestly had assumed Last Snow was a rare, brewery only release at 2 per person or less that was $15-20 based on certain users posts...until I saw the feedback in your ISO from yesterday. I found the actual price and that it wasn't as limited as I had thought.

I asked clarifying questions today to try to understand why $32:$20 was the offer. I thought perhaps a new batch of $10 Atrial came out...but hey...if you want Last Snow bad enough...

I think trade forum comments should stay. Some are helpful and others help me know who to avoid trading with.
