I have a stainless steel dry hopper for my keg. The information that came with it states it is safe to use during a boil. If I were to put my 6oz of hops in this for my whirlpool addition would there be any negative effect? I ask because I came across some info on other threads (not here) where people stated it will reduce the amount of hop oils that get put into the wort. Is this true?

Yes, just by virtue of the fact that they can't swim in a container will reduce the utilization (or even whirlpool fully)

This can be adjusted for if you use it every time though. Just be aware you may have to up your hop usage slightly.

OK, thank you for the input guys! I have no problem dropping the hops in with out a filter as that is how I always have done it.

You are correct...even if that was not the question...I just reread the post and the OP was using 6 mf oz of hops in the whirlpool...no big deal if he gets low utilization! cheers

You are going to save some hops for dryhopping, right?

It depends on the size of the ss mesh. I used a 400 micron mesh hop spider and had poor results . . . just not enough transfer of liquid in/out to properly isomerize the hops. Same when dry hopping in the keg, poor transfer of hop oils. For that reason it now gathers dust.

    Yes I am. I have:
    1oz cascades for 60min
1oz each citra, galaxy, mosaic for flame out
1oz each citra, galaxy, mosaic for 170 (30 min steep)
1oz each citra, galaxy, mosaic for primary dry hop (3 days into active ferm for 5 days)
1oz each citra, galaxy, mosaic, cascade for keg hop

I was envisioning something totally enclosed (not a hop spider)

It is enclosed. Basically stainless steel mesh in a cylinder shape with metal end caps

To enhance flavor I would suggest moving FO/KO addition to 5 or 10 min.
I am assuming this an IPA...shouldn't result in too much bitterness with only 1 oz of cascade for bittering (depending on your intentions)

Yes low bitterness intended, this will be my attempt at an NEIPA.
So you would suggest moving my FO hops to last 10 minutes to enhance the flavor?
How much difference in the bittering will that make?

Yeah, I have one of those also (gathering dust). It'll take 3+ ounces of hops but it gave me poor dry-hopping results. When using much more than one ounce the hops will expand and be tightly packed . . . I never liked the final results. I've not used the little guy in the boil but it's of the same material as the hop spider. Don't want to discourage you (others say they like it), but I went back to nylon paint strainer bags.

You are not discouraging me, I love to hear peoples opinions and ideas on how they do things! Thanks for the information. Maybe I will pick up a nylon paint bag for this beer since it will be my first time brewing it, and I will test the keg hopper on a beer I have brewed before so I can see if there is a difference for me and if there is then ill just add more hops!

    Cheers!

I'll be honest, I don't like Cascade for bittering...if it were me (and it's not), I'd move 1/2 oz of one of the other hops to bittering and use the Cascades late with the FO/KO hops (@5 or 10 min)...shouldn't change bitterness too much...assuming normal AA levels. Do you have brewing software?...plug it in and see what it says...good luck

The only thing worse than Cascade for bittering is something like Saaz (2.5%), obviously a hold over from the old days before hops were more easily obtained. Any of your high alpha hops will give the same bitterness with half the quantity/mess/aggravation. A very high alpha neutral-hop (Magnum/Warrior) is more better. This works so well for me that I switched almost entirely to hop extract; want 60 IBUs? . . . dial it in.

For OP; is your keg Dry Hopper from Utah Bio?

Without opening Beersmith, I would say closer to 30 IBUs as is
