hey, if it wasn't a sunday, my simple answer to my question would be "toss and use a new one". but i wanted to keg a beer today, so some advice would be great. i was looking at my tubing that i'd normally use to keg or bottle, and i noticed a white mark in it. it doesn't look 3 dimensional or fuzzy. it didn't break up when i pinched the tubing. i made up a bleach solution (the powdered pink stuff) and let it soak for a bit, then ran some more bleach through it. its still there. was debating about trying some oxyclean. i can't tell if that's mould or discoloration. erring on the side of caution would mean to assume its mould. thoughts?
You can get pre-packaged or bulk vinyl tubing at your nearest big box home center, open now. If you really have no store options, then maybe you could cut the spot off and work with a shorter length of tubing?
It is used for potable water lines, including stuff like sink sprayers, so yes, it is as safe as any plastic line. I still pre-clean and sanitize. My homebrew shop actually buys the exact same stuff on the long bulk spool to sell by the foot. It can be found in the plumbing section, along with the hard pipe, fittings, etc.
If you cannot replace it right away, you could cut the section out and splice the rest back together if you have a short section of some other kind of tubing with an OD close to the ID of this tubing.
i put it on hot/boiling water. its vinyl tubing. the result? its now cloudy. no clue where that original spot was. so i may just use new tubing
Don't you only need to worry about plastic being food safe if it's outside of regular room temps, i.e. if you're working with it during a mash or boil?
