Spam/advertising, trolling, useless text, too much text which would make the field vertically expand too much, etc ... I could go on and on. Trust me. We'll be forced to deal with the complaints.

And I think we allow users to do quite a bit already, but if it's not enough you can always do whatever the hell you want with your own free-for-all Libertarian website. Good luck with that.

Sounds like you are resolute in this decision. But if not: what about limiting the location field to simply State or Country of Origin? If folks can't be trusted to do that, drop downs would solve the blank field issue. Or moderators could help.

At least to me, there is real value in having a readily apparent user location posted. For one, it helps informed members take into account potential homer bias in reviews. I also use location regularly to scan through ISO:FT trades to quickly ballpark the cost of trading. And on occasion, I'll read an awesome post/comment from a member and if their location is local to me, or in an area I travel to, I'll shoot a BM for a meet up. The activation energy required to click through to identify location can be significant.

I'd love it if you reconsidered this decision, but your explanation certainly clarified why the decision was made. Thanks.

Believe me, i want the location to be listed under the avatar also. But due to the fact it's not possible right now, and all i did was click your avatar to see the popup that tells me your from Delaware. If that's what i have to do until the whole sight upgrade and integration is done, so be it. Then when Todd has a chance to recode the location field i'm sure he will consider it.

You can validate the entry using a callback (e.g, parse it against a list of states/countries), and/or limit the number of characters. I don't know if the settings are there to do this with the default location field, but you could always hide that one and make a custom location field. Users could also enter their US zip code, which can easily be validated, and choose the level of detail to display (in order of specificity, country, state, city), and you pull that data for them.

    Back on topic...
Still too much eyeball burning...headache inducing...white space and the contrast...just like the rent...is still too damn high.

Yeah, I'm aware of the callback feature, but using it for location is pretty sloppy IMO as it requires the user to type in their state/country exactly. And you can't hide the default location field without hacking the core templates, and it's really not important enough for that.

Anyway, none of this has anything to do with whitespace, which we've already addressed quite a bit since the initial launch.

    Closing this one down now.

    Thanks, Todd
