I love a solid aged brew like any one else does, but some times I also really enjoy a beer with a little kick! Anyone else out there enjoy a 'hot' beer every once and a while?

Tonight I had some very fresh Sierra Nevada Big Foot Barleywine (2012) and it was tasting great! I also treated myself with a bottle of 2012 Firestone Walker Sucaba; boy was it amazing!

(if anyone is confused by my usage of 'hot' I am referring to a little bit of alcohol bite in the beer.)

Well I have 4 SN Bigfoot 2012s sitting in the fridge right now. Haven't had one yet. Might be saving 3 until next year. I have a taste aversion to hot anything. I rarely, if ever, drink anything alcoholic other than beer. If someone is passing around some great scotch I'll have a bit, but that's it. Beer where I can taste the alcohol strongly is hard for me to put down. My taste buds just do not like the stuff.

I love me some hot beer...you just need that kick every once in a while...as a Cognag drinker for years, I'm just used to a little bite every so often...

    Cheers!

I dont mind a little heat once and awhile. I opened a bottle of Sucaba earlier and had vanilla ice cream with it. They both went very well together. I did not get a ton of heat though from the Sucaba because of the pairing.

I love Mikkeller, but Mikkeller Black was just sheer crap to me. I like heat, but that beer was a huge disappointment.

I don't seek out beers because I hear they are "hot" but I will go with the flow if I happen to encounter one.

I don't mind when big beers have a fairly intense alcohol quality about them (not too surprising coming from a huge fan of barleywines and imperial stouts, not to mention neat bourbon and scotch). With that being said, while the heat is not bothersome, it's not necessarily something I prefer all the time...

I personally prefer beers with low heat and a cleaner, cooler gullet impact

If I get you correctly then yea I kind of like them. The hottest beers I've had in the past say 6 months or so were SmuttyNose Wheatwine 2010, 12.0 abv, Samichlaus dark label, bottled in 09, consumed in Aug 2011, which means aged for nearly three years, 14.0abv and Belzebuth, 13.0abv, which was close to being past its freshness date. I'll say those beers were harsh as hell. Especially the Smuttynose, I could feel the alcohol burning my stomach a bit. But I didn't much to eat that day either, that could have played a role. Also had 2008 DFH 120min. That speaks for itself.

Then there's DFH WWS 2011, while being a total booze bomb, boozier than the above mentioned beer, it was a lot smoother/easier to drink.

Not sure what Cognag is but it sounds like something you would go blind from drinking :stuck_out_tongue:

I don't mind it if there's a good whiskey barrel presence. Full Sail Black Gold 2010 I think was one of the hotter beers from memory and I really enjoyed it.

When I first started drinking craft, I could hardly stand hot beers. But the more stuff I tried, the easier it got to tolerate high ABVs and appreciate their role in a well-crafted beer. Having said that, if it's not well-crafted and the alcohol is just way out of balance, I won't enjoy it.

I thought this was going to be a topic about beers served hot. I've only tried with Chateau Jiahu, which was a failure. There are some great wines and meads served hot, so it seems like there should be at least some beers that are good served hot.

I actually enjoy the 8% abv and up stuff the most. I just had a DFH palo santo last night, nice hot kick that is. I had the DIPA that is big foot myself lately, Yea they call it a BW, not buying that myself. I have to give the 2011 a try today and see how the hops did. I really enjoy 2011 BF fresh better than 2012 so far, but hell who can remember that far back?

I like bourbon forward beers myself, within reason. I also enjoy the coconut that can arise from an aged bourbon barrel stout.

Bring on the heat! Love boozy beers! Fresh BB stouts/barleywines do it for me

    Cheers!

i do - although i prefer these hotter beers to be from barrel aging, rather than flat out out of control alcohol presence. a nice complex bourbon flavor is pleasant, astringent, abrasive alcohol flavor is not.
