Whole Foods Is About To Start Brewing Its Own Beer

"...one location set to open on Houston's Post Oak Boulevard this summer plans to pour beer under a label never before sold at Whole Foods, or anywhere else: its own.

Last week, the Austin-based supermarket chain started soliciting applications for a brewmaster to head a brewery at the new location -- a first for the company and, perhaps, for the American supermarket industry. "

I guess this would be considered regional beer news, if not please move it to the appropriate forum.

im wondering how this is going to work...

im sure they want to hire a brewmaster with some credentials vs. a homebrewer who has 75+ batches under their belt.

i don't think professional brewers work accordingly to shift work either...

Damn, I would never have expected Houston to be the first place in the country for something like this, we're usually last even for Texas for cool things. (Because Texas is really just Houston, Dallas and Austin, duh) I have high expectations for this too, hopefully Whole Foods can do a good job. I don't think they'd do this if they weren't planning on making very good beer, especially as their first try at it. Hopefully they pay the brewmaster well and have some real competition from outside of just the Houston area.

Soliciting applications for a position as important as a brewmaster does not seem to be a good starting point, but I'll still be rooting for success. This is pretty cool.

Being a former (maybe disgruntled) employee of Wfm, i would say, don't get your hopes up. I was a beer/wine buyer for one of their locations, i have a hard time believing that they will put out anything "amazing". Their name brand beer and wine that they carry has always been pretty awful. Just look up Goose Island Lamar St. Organic Pale Ale.

Looks like they stopped making it sometime in 2010/2011.

They just had Evil Twin brew a beer for them to specifically commemorate the opening of one store. Maybe in 2010 they weren't serious about beer, but most places weren't. It's pretty clear going into any Whole Foods today that they realized the value of good beer. I doubt they'd do something like this to make mediocre beer. What's the point when it would be way cheaper to just contract it out? I'm not saying I think it's going to be the best beer in the world, but I'm guessing it will be Saint Arnold/Karbach level basic beers that are guaranteed to be fresh. If they can promise me their IPAs won't be 6 months old, that's pretty much all I need.
