Hi. Brewing a NY eve beer quick. Then out to bring in the new year. Store didn't have Cascade pellets, had whole leaf. How much to sub? Bittering hops is Centennial, have that covered. I was going to add .25oz pellets at 20 min and again at 5. Have to use whole leaf. How much is equal to .25 oz? I have a full oz of leaves. Thanks.
BeerSmith's default setting to sub whole leaf for pellets is use to 11% more. 0.25 oz * 1.11 = 0.28 oz. HNY
Pellets supposedly give you an extra IBU or two. I wouldn't even bother to calculate this unless you're under 20IBUs total. Anything you use for a flavor hop or aroma hop is even less significant on calculating IBUs. I agree with kjyost that you should be using your whole oz of hops. If not in the boil, then for at least a KO addition of .5 oz. If you're already done, add it after ferm. for a small dry hop. You'll be glad you did. Sounds like you're doing an APA?
Thanks! Yes, APA. "Centennial Blonde". 7# Pale malt .75# cara pils .5# crystal 10 (my LHBS has 15) .5# Vienna .25oz Centennial at 60 and 30 .25 Cascade at 20 and 5 The first time I made it they didn't have Centennial. So I used Amarillo, and blasted with a little Cascade at 0. The keg was gone in a night. No lying. Nothing but foam at the end of the party. Maybe should have stuck wtih Amarillo, but thought I'd try the real recipe this time. Given the recipe, should I still "blast" with the Cascade? I do like the dry hop idea...
