It definitely helps to win some gift certs and stuff, but by no means am I making money or breaking even, especially with all the kegs I've bought lately.

I got a BOS last November (Gordon Strong judged my beer, hence my avatar), and that netted me about $200. I used the whole $200 on brewing ingredients and that lasted me for quite a while this year. Since I only entered 5 beers to that comp, my ROI wasn't too shabby that time around. I took 3rd place BOS in a comp this year (I've only entered 2 this year) and that won me enough gift certs to get me a whole sack of base grain and some hops, so that really helped, too. I only entered 6 beers there, too.

I'm entering so many beers into the one coming up in September because it's the one my club hosts and all of the money we make is from said comp. We dont charge dues or anything for our club members. I also want to bring the heat as we have some really awesome brewers in our club and I'd like win as many medals as possible. We are a very competitive bunch, and "1-upping" these guys isnt easy...

Just got done brewing a brown IPA with my brother-in-law. A 5.5gal batch @ 5% ABV with 10.5 oz of hops (3oz will be used for dry hopping), majority at 15min and flame-out. I am excited to see how this one turns out.

Mashing in an American IPA right now... haven't done one of those in a while. As a result, I have 3 oz of Amarillo I got from hopsdirect a couple years ago. They've been inside the open foil pouch, inside a freezer grade ziploc bag in the bottom of my freezer. They still smell pretty good, might as well use them up!

    11# 2-row
    3# Munich
    .5 # Carared
1/2 Amarillo hop pellets 8.6% FWH
    1 oz Galena 13.8% 60 min
    .5 oz Centennial 10.6% 15 min
    .5 oz Centennial 10.6% 10 min
    .5 oz Centennial 9.7% 5 min
    .5 oz Centennial 9.7% 0 min
    S-05 dry yeast

Primary for 14 days in a swamp cooler. Rack to secondary.

    Dry hop
    2.5 oz Amarillo 8.6% 7 days
    1 oz Citra 13.9% 4 days

Bottle over labor day weekend, ought to be carbonated by late September.

    Hold on! Change in plans!
Going to brew a SMASH IPA with Pilsner and Columbus fermented with WY1968.
Sparge some extra runnings for a starter of WY3787.
Then next week brew my attempt at Westmalle Tripel for the homebrew exchange.
And that will kill a sack of Pils.

In case anyone cares, I took half the Galena and reserved it for the 15 min addition. Was afraid the Galena and Amarillo FWH would be too much.

Brew session went well. Did have a bit of trouble keeping the mash temp with this small bill. Still hit my #'s. Should be in the keg in a few weeks.

    Cheers!

That just sounds like a waste of hops to me... I mean, it sounds good and all, and I love hops, I'll damn near eat them out of the package.. But that much in that small of a batch..

I brewed my Simcoe/Citra IPA this weekend. Hit it all 1.072 OG.

I'm kind of bored, so I think I'm going to rack my Amarillo out of secondary thats already got 1 oz of Amarillo in it.. Gonna rack to the keg, and dry hop the rest in there while it chills out and carbs.

Kegged a saison fermented with Wyeast Farmhouse blend, and brewed an English bitter with an American twist - late boil additions of Citra, dry hopping with Ahtanum.

might be true. I was given a lot of simcoe (about a pound) from a friend who was moving out of state, plus a few ounces of some other hops (citra and cascade). Plus I had an ounce of Magnum left over from another brew. I used a good amount of the simcoe on a previous batch of SMASH pale ale, but then needed to use the rest as it may be months before I can brew again (starting a part time contracting job).

This is definitely the most hops I have used in a lower abv beer, but I wanted to see what would happen, and I figured this might somewhat resemble Stone's More Brown Than Black which I loved.
