I'm the business manager of a local magazine here in RI, and Todd couldn't be more correct - it's not cheap running a magazine. We actually break even on subscriptions, and rely on ad revenue for profits.

Also of note - the paper stock BA is printed on is high quality. I would rather pay a few bucks more for something that looks great on my coffee table as opposed to something printed on that cheap newspaper quality stock that you see from those freebie publications you can pick up at coffee shops.

Didn't even have to click on your profile to know that you were a freelance journalist after reading that response.

The cost of travel should not be high for this type of publication. There are high quality beer bloggers/writers in every major and most minor markets in this country that can provide freelance content with minimal travel cost.

I never ment to suggest that $29.99 was a steep price for a magazine of any caliber, let alone BA. I am merely surprised at the significant increase compared to my previous experiences. I have always thought that the yearly subscription was a steal and I wondered how you guys kept costs down so much. I am in any case going to renew.

Todd, I very much appreciate your responding to my post. One of the things I appreciate most about this site and the magazine is how much it allows people of all ranks to communicate on the same level.

Thanks also to those who have posted; most of which has been constructive.
