Definitely a good read. This is really the only online forum I frequent on a regular basis and, aside from my love of all things beer, the fact that the community seems to be more civil than the internet in general is why I keep coming back.

I largely stay away from comment sections of online articles nowadays, especially when it comes to politics or world news, because most of it is non-constructive, aggravating bs from that "loud 1%". I do visit Philadelphia sports forums, but those are typically frustrating for entirely different reasons, ha. Cheers!

Thanks for the share OP, good read. There's enough injustice in this world to get truly angry about. Beer needn't be one of them. But if all breweries don't start marking their labels with clear easy to read bottled dates, I'ma gonna go on da rampage.:grimacing:

You must be talking about folks with no real problems or ignoring their real problems. I was like this once. Then I turned 20.

I see parallels between some beer geeks/nerds and science fiction geeks/nerds. I saw the same kind of hyperbole, for instance, when the Star Trek reboot came out where people responded like they walked in on someone beating their wife to death with their favorite dog with talk about how Abrams had destroyed their childhood and fantasy world with malicious intent. Same thing (and person funnily enough) with the newest Star Wars.

So my take is some of the overreactions you see is less about beer in particular and more about geekdom/nerdom in general. Passion drives people to act like asses sometimes.

It makes me sad to see on Facebook, and other sites where comments are open, when people unabashedly berate others for a proposed trade, beer sale or opinion that they themselves don't agree with. Just like everything else in life, who cares what other people do? If you, yourself, aren't involved, why throw your negative two cents in? Live and let live. Trade and let trade. It is just beer after all. Even if it's damn good beer a lot of the time.

This is very true, there is something just incredibly spur of the moment/satisfying/on a whim situation with just having things fall in your lap for no expectations or effort.

I just love all those times I went into a shop or bar looking for some beers and found things just out of surprises! Some of my favorite beers and beer memories were made that way.

If you can't go to a local shop and find a good beer...then it might not be the beer's problem.

As many have stated, it's the internet..so you can act/type like a lunatic because you're not having to do so to a person's face. I'm sure(I hope) half the things that are typed, nobody would actually walk up to say an AB beer rep and tear them a new asshole they way they do online.

Well said. I have done the same. Microbrew smuggled back to me from Australia as a gift or trying a specialty German Lager you would never expect to see in a whole-in-the-wall joint. I missed PtY again this year. I'm cool with it. Just enjoy the place you're in. Or as my Dad once said..."you can't drink 'em all, but you can drink the one in your hand"

We live in the age of outrage. People surf (including but not limited to) the internet with the intention of finding something to be angry about. The ignorant and bored are trivializing things people actually should be outraged at. Like Bud Light Chelada. There should be riots.

One thing some people don't get is that Jupiler is still the best selling beer in Belgium. A mass produced adjunct lager. Extra funny then that at Christmas you could find corked/caged 750ml bottles of the stuff....Most normal Belgian bars and restaurants will carry the most popular lagers (Jupiler, Maes, Bavik) and mass produced versions of the Belgian styles (Wittekerke, Leffe). Although great beer is produced all over Belgium, not every Belgian has the palate for the styles. I let my wife choose a restaurant in Brussels, right off Grand Place, had one lager in bottles as their choice. Delirium was a few doors down....

My dad actually told me about a "Red Eye" that they would drink back in the late 40s/early 50s, which was half beer, half tomato juice. You could order one in a bar. Not sure if that was a New England thing or not....

Light-tasting lager is the best selling beer world-wide. There are virtually no exceptions by individual country, either.

I think the DCBeer guy makes some points in the article that I can relate to. When people consume themselves day in and day out with all things beer, whether it be drinking beer, cruising BA or other sites, reading beer related news articles, and talking beer with their friends or co-works; at that point beer can become more than "just beer, man." As mentioned in the article, with so many people into craft, people feel the need to validate themselves. How many badges, how many likes, how many shares, how many bottles in the cellar. For me personally, moderation is always key, not just with physical beer consumption, but the beer everything all the time.
