Why are IPAs/DIPAs so popular?

Don't get me wrong, a good portion of my favorite beers are IPA's and DIPA's, but why is the style so popular? Many breweries make IPA's, some make more than one and for many breweries it is their flagship style. But why? Is it because the IPA has become (in my opinion) the iconic style of the craft movement? Is it because we're a nation of hopheads looking for the next big hop fix? Is it because breweries are trying to play it safe by repeating a tried-and-true style? I'd like to hear your opinions.

Everyone seems to be looking for new hop bombs. Plus, in a Samuel L. Jackson voice, "it'll get ya drunk!" But in all honesty, I enjoy IPA/DIPAs but I think we need more production of different styles.

Not to be redundant, but it's the hops. The smell and taste of hops is just so intoxicating, I just can't get enough.

... because chicken chit microbrewers are capable of making drinkable versions while most of their other offerings are a bore.
You really have to be below par not to be able to make a fair to good quality IPA.

Because India pale ales, stouts and sours have the broadest range of flavor profiles. You can go crazy with those types of beers. It's hard to do much with Amber ales and pale lagers; limited by style constraints.

    I don't know. I'm not much of a fan.

But it's not for a lack of appreciation. Unfortunately something about ipas leaves me with a damned near crippling headache if I have more than one.

For the same reason people like salt, sugar and fat. It tastes good to most people. Don't overthink this, it's basic

This. A lot of styles seem to strive for that "perfect ideal," and I'm specifically thinking of the classic German and Belgian styles here. American IPAs, on the other hand, have no such ideal, and are fertile areas for innovation and experimentation. I've recently focused on being able to identify certain hop strains, and as long as new strains are created, there will be new IPAs; the difference between Simcoe and Galaxy hops, for example, is just huge.

Additionally, I tend to to think of hoppy beers as "thrillseekers' beers." I like to challenge myself with strong hops, and I think others do as well. Because of that, I'm always eager to try IPAs that are new to me, and I think the craft beer market is responsive to this mentality.

Why are pizza, bacon and ice cream so popular? (not together, although that would be interesting.)

Citrusy, hoppy, bitter, juicy, refreshing. Awesome. Nothing better than an Odell's IPA with a spicy Thai dinner. Perfect.

Lot of flavor, moderately alcoholic and very drinkable.

Other styles, stouts for example, can deliver assertive flavors but IPAs tend to be more attenuated which allows for a greater ease of consumption. There may not be another style that can combine the flavor, alcohol and drinkability.

Agree on drinkability. It's hard to sit back and drink half a dozen stouts in a night whereas the same number of IPA's just isn't as much of a task.

Several people provided the correct answer:

    • “Because they taste good.”

    • “It tastes good to most people.”

    • “Because they're delicious.”

Yet, so many folks in Casper fear the bitter as much as they fear the dark.
